COWI has an opening for an Engineering Manager located in our Toronto office. The incumbent will hold the internal title Head of Discipline and will lead and grow a team of engineers.
The team is responsible to deliver on a variety of underground infrastructure projects located across North America.
Reporting to Vice President, Head of Engineering Canada, the incumbent will be part of a team responsible for leadership within Canada.
The Head of Discipline role comprises the management and development of staff in the assigned team and working with other people managers to inform staffing and workforce planning processes based on up-to-date view on skills and capabilities of individuals.
The incumbent contributes to the identification, recruitment, and development of talent for the Company.
The Head of Discipline also solve specialist challenges on projects within its discipline via direct participation in projects and supports adjacent disciplines as needed.
Your key responsibilities will be :
People Management :
- Provides leadership and guidance to assigned staff, including :
- Providing feedback and coaching Support professional development of staff and help staff find opportunities for development Conducting annual performance evaluations Recommending salaries and Defining and following up on staff performance targets.
- Ensures assigned staff are effectively engaged on projects
- Contributes to development, improvement, and implementation of the corporate policies
- Work with senior leadership to develop a clear vision and strategy for the section and effectively communicate that vision / strategy to the team
- Develop, support, and implement succession plans
- Build a diverse and inclusive team and
- Is an ambassador for COWI’s Values
Project Delivery :
- Function as project manager or design manager on projects for public, private or contractor partners. Project will vary in size and complexity.
- Provide design management or technical expertise for project delivery.
- Oversee structural analysis and preparation of engineering drawings, specifications and tender documents.
As a member of the Canada Leadership Team :
- Participates in periodic strategy meetings and contributes to development and achievement of the COWI Group’s strategic priorities
- Contributes to ensuring that COWI North America meets or exceeds its target strategies
- Provides leadership in business development and marketing activities for the Company including identifying, tracking, positioning, and pursuing project opportunities, and representing the Company in external settings including technical committees, conferences, seminars, professional bodies and business groups, and
- Responsible for developing and maintaining relations with specified key clients.

On top of that, you will have :
- Bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or geotechnical engineering
- Must have professional engineer status in Canada
- Previous related engineering, project management or business development experience
- Approximately 5+ years of experience as a people manager
- Experience developing teams and at providing feedback, mentoring, and coaching to team members
- Proven ability to lead others through change
- Consider both progress and results for people development, show genuine interest in employee's career development
- Proven experience making fair and balanced decisions for the employee and Company
- Skilled interpersonal and relationship building skills
- Professional written and oral communication skills able to listen and share relevant information
- Self-motivated, flexible, and able to handle multiple tasks in an innovative environment
- Effective skilled time management skills
