Duties

Maritime Search and Rescue Coordinators provide an invaluable service to people in need of assistance on the federally controlled waterways.

They oversee the activation, planning and coordination of maritime search and rescue (SAR) with the assistance of strategically located Canadian Coast Guard SAR vessels, Royal Canadian Air Force resources and partners such as police, fire and emergency medical services.

Intent of the process

The purpose of this inventory is to create one or more pools of pre-qualified candidates that will be used to fill Maritime Search and Rescue Coordinator within the Canadian Coast Guard, Central region.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION

ED1 : A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternatives*.

The employer-approved alternatives to a secondary school diploma are : A satisfactory score on the Public Service Commission test approved as an alternative to a secondary school diploma;

or an acceptable combination of education, training and / or experience.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION

OC1 : Watchkeeping Mate certificate or Watchkeeping Mate, Near Coastal certificate of Competency issued under the CANADA SHIPPING ACT, 2001 Marine Personnel Regulations SOR / 2007-115 (or equivalent as determined by Transport Canada’s Regulations for equivalency).

EXPERIENCE

EX1 : 12 months sea time experience as a navigation officer in charge of a watch OR Equivalent experience as per article 106(2)(C) of the Marine Personnel Regulations (SOR / 2007-115).

EX2 : 12 months experience as a maritime coordinator in a Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) or Marine Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) in Canada;

EX3 : 12 months experience in Canadian Coast Guard operations, such as the Regional Operations Centre.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

OR1 : Work shift work.

OR2 : Work overtime.

OR3 : Travel.

OR4 : Work within secure facilities.

OR5 : Obtain a valid Health Canada Medical.

OR6 : Obtain a Secret security clearance.

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance

Work on a rotating shift schedule is used to maintain 24 / 7 service.

Be part of a stand-by schedule with possibility of call back for overtime work.

The completion of the following two courses within 12 months from appointment to the position in addition to the appropriate On-Job-Training program is mandatory :

  • Maritime Search Planning (MSP)
  • Search and Rescue (SAR) Mission Coordinator (SMC)

The completion of the following course within a timeline that is operationally feasible :

SAR Mobile Facilities / On-Scene coordinator (SMF / OSC)

Wear and maintain a Canadian Coast Guard uniform in accordance with Canadian Coast Guard uniform manual.
