Description
The Children & Youth Ministries Coordinator will provide oversight to all children and youth outreach and programs at all three Mississauga Community Church sites.
He / she will give focused attention to strengthen and grow the programs and attend to the spiritual growth and development of the youth in the church and community.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
Spiritual Leadership
- Contribute to the spiritual development of children and youth and their families within the church and community by mentoring, discipling, encouraging, and modeling Christ-like attitudes and behaviors.
- Pray with and lead youth and family members to faith in Jesus Christ
- Follow up with youth and parents / guardians on spiritual decisions made, building, and strengthening relationships, and guiding youth in establishing active links with the Corps and its ministries.
- Demonstrate keen pastoral interest in community outreach. Build relationships with youth and families that are connected to our Community & Family Services, Day Care etc.
Encourage the volunteer team to do the same.
- Cultivate a spiritual and relational leadership style with youth & children, their friends, and their families.
- Work as a key member with the church’s Pastoral Team providing pastoral care and oversight for children & youth ministries.
Children & Youth Programing Oversight
- Coordinate and maintain ( and when necessary, reimage) existing programing relevant to the Youth of the church and community at large, including worship, Bible studies, small groups, fellowship, discipleship, and regular special events.
- Oversee the development, organization, and mobilization of a comprehensive outreach ministry for our communities, providing regular programs and events (e.
g., Rally Day, Easter Egg Hunt, Christmas Breakfast etc.) that will connect with youth and families from our Community & Family Services ministries.
Develop and organize outreach to schools and neighborhood organizations.
- Oversee the Youth Music School and work collaboratively to support its leaders and other volunteers. Provides oversight to the Music School Director.
- Promote, support, and participate in Divisional and Territorial Children and Youth events.
- Work cooperatively and consultatively with the corps’ leaders to prepare and deliver youth worship services, sermons, devotionals for the senior corps and for youth events.
- Work together with existing fundraising efforts to raise funds and support participation in local (church & community), divisional and territorial initiatives.
- Attend Sunday worship services and participate fully as a part of the Mississauga Community Church congregation understanding that Sunday meeting attendance is an essential part of the ministry responsibility.
- Commit to personal and professional development in coordination with supervisor (courses, training, workshops, etc.).
Volunteer Coordination & Leadership
Develop a team of volunteers; recruit, supervise, orientate, support and train volunteer leaders for youth discipleship programs, such as Bible studies, youth groups, Music School etc.
in partnership with the Corps Officers and other youth leaders.
- Develop strategies and recommendations for volunteer development.
- Prepare, post, and maintain all volunteer schedules for those supervised, in accordance with operational requirements, ensuring adequate coverage for all program functions.
- Ensure MCC is compliant with all screening processes for children & youth volunteers, including completion of police checks for volunteers, statement of applicant for work with children and youth forms, and online abuse prevention training.
Administration
- Ensure written records and logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information are prepared, reported, and maintained.
- Assist in the maintenance of volunteer files and statistical records as directed.
- See that all related promotional material for youth programs and services is drafted, designed, and distributed to church and community members in a timely manner (subject to approval by supervisor).
- Participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for the youth programs.
Communication
- Communicate in an empathetic manner with volunteer team, congregants, families, and staff.
- Maintain frequent communication with children and parents using various communication methods (in person, phone, email, social media, website, etc.)
- Demonstrate skill in social media applications (advertising, creating videos etc.)
- Able to embrace growing technology needs, post to social media platforms and develop cutting edge online communications.
- Inform the Corps Officer regarding any concerns or issues in a timely manner.
Health and Safety
- Maintain program storage areas (e.g., updating, safety, organizing, etc.) in a tidy manor.
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Seek out continual education in food safety and health standards, including maintaining Safe Food Handling Certification.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform other related duties as required.
Working Conditions :
- This is a permanent full-time position 40 hours per week.
- Working environment is typically in the office and in the community in generally agreeable conditions at all three sites.
- Ability to lift / move up to 40 lbs.
- This job requires reaching, bending, and stooping frequently, working in a sitting, and standing position for periods of time.
- Travel is associated with this position 10% . i.e., on occasion pick-up supplies, attend community meetings. Note : required to use the program vehicle when available.
Normal hours of work : The working conditions are such that in order to meet the operational needs of the job, flexibility in scheduling is required as it relates to hours of work and work schedule.
Includes a ½-hour unpaid meal break where applicable. Schedule will include evenings and weekends with the expectation of attendance and participation on Sundays at Mississauga Community Church.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS :
- Completed a post-secondary degree / college diploma program in related field of study, such as Children / Youth Ministry, or Biblical & Theological Studies.
- Current, valid Safe Food Handlers Certification and First Aid / CPR Certification or willingness to obtain.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE :
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience working with youth and youth programming.
- Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License; personal vehicle and insurance, and a current copy of a Driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

- A second language would be an asset.
- Ability to provide supervision, coaching, and conflict resolution.
- Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.
e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
