POSITION OVERVIEW :

The Globe and Mail is seeking an ambitious editor to join our national desk and help drive our Canadian news coverage. The Deputy National Editor will work with reporters across the country to determine which stories to cover as well as the best ways to tell them.

Reporting to the National Editor, this is a management role directly responsible for a team of 5-10 reporters. The ideal candidate is an excellent collaborator and communicator who knows how to motivate and support people to achieve their best.

You must be a strong editor who will offer fresh ideas on story angles and formats and advocate for the exceptional journalism that defines The Globe.

As Deputy National Editor, you'll be at the centre of our mission-driven journalism, with the opportunity to drive a variety of coverage, from breaking news to enterprise reporting to profiles of Canada's most influential and interesting people.

While we are open to candidates who have no prior assigning experience, years of high-impact reporting is a must.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Assign daily and breaking news
  • Brainstorm ideas and angles for national news coverage
  • Edit stories in a variety of formats
  • Directly manage a team of 5-10 reporters
  • Collaborate with reporters and editors across the newsroom

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • At least seven years working in news media
  • Strong news judgment, with endless curiosity about what's happening around you
  • Strong editing skills
  • Previous experience in a supervisory role is an asset
  • Ability to work some evening and weekend hours

This position is based in our Toronto office.

VACCINATION POLICY :

All offers of employment with The Globe and Mail are conditional upon the candidate being Fully Vaccinated. To be Fully Vaccinated is defined as someone who has received the full series of a vaccine or a combination of vaccines accepted by the Government of Canada (currently Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Janssen) and has received the last dose at least 14 days prior to their start date.

To prove they are Fully Vaccinated, all new hires will be required to provide evidence by emailing a copy of their vaccine dose administration receipt(s) to Human Resources prior to their start date.
