Responsibilities / Accountabilities :
The primary responsibility of the applicant is to (develop and) teach a theoretically, methodologically sophisticated and relevant course at the university level within the parameters of the course description listed above.
In keeping with a technology-enhanced learning environment utilizing laptop computers and wireless connectivity, the Sessional Lecturer will deliver the course using a technology-enhanced learning approach that includes a variety of inclusive teaching and learning strategies and assessments.
The Sessional Lecturer will prepare, deliver and grade all course material and assignments and be available for consultation with students during and following completion of the course session.
This position falls within the bargaining unit represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and will be subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the University and PSAC.
The collective agreement may be found on the Human Resources section of our website. Candidates will be required to certify that they are currently legally eligible to work in Canada for the duration of the contract.
Qualifications :
The successful candidate willhave demonstrated excellent teaching contributions with a proven aptitude forteaching at the pre-service and / or grade 7-12 teaching level.
Required Skills :
- Evidence of successful teaching, including via appropriately challenging inquiry- or problem-based lessons, at the pre-service and / or secondary level;
- Knowledge of grades 7 - 12 science education in the Ontario context with a focus on secondary sciences;
- Demonstrates an understanding of core content within the OCT accreditation requirements;
- A proven commitment to providing innovative and inclusive teaching strategies;
- Evidence of a well-grounded understanding of curricular and pedagogical design, educational research, and assessment that integrates a variety of digital technologies;
- Evidence of the integration of theories of learning / teaching into instructional practice, including task design and development;
- Evidence of implementing innovative and inclusive teaching strategies;
- Evidence of an ability to critically reflect on one’s own professional practice and adapt practices as needed;
- Evidence of an ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment;
- Excellent communication skills with an ability to maintain effective relationships with a range of faculty, staff and students;
- Evidence of teaching that fosters reflection, critical thinking, creativity, innovation, problem solving and independence;
- Openness to new and diverse perspectives for the learning and teaching of the general sciences;
- Demonstrated evidence of understanding of how (pre-service) teachers learn and develop.
Education :
- A Bachelor’s degree in in a scientific field related to life sciences, biological, chemical, or physical sciences is required;
- A Master’s degree in education or equivalent is required;
- A member in good standing with the Ontario College of Teachers is an asset;
- A PhD in education or a related relevant field of study is an asset.
Experience :
- Successful experience teaching science at the pre-service and / or grades 7-12 levels;
- Successful infusion of technologies in practice as purposeful teaching tools for, as, and of learning in the classroom;
- Demonstrated evidence-based, or research-informed practice;
- Experience working within an LMS is an asset;
- Experience teaching in a virtual learning environment is an asset.
