A Day in the Life

Reporting to the Chair, Geography and Tourism Studies, the incumbent is responsible for providing high-quality advising on academic program requirements to the departmental committee / department chair.

As well, monitoring academic progress of transfer, international and exchange students, students doing a minor in the department as well as studnets looking to change their major.

The Academic Advisor / Communications Coordinator is responsible for conducting degree audits, coordinating LOP applications and transfer credits, supporting events and recruitment initiatives and monitoring the registration system.

The incumbent will also coordinate communications for the department, including the website, social media, and promotional materials.

As the Academic Advisor / Communications Coordinator, you will :

  • Perform student academic advising for undergraduate students in the assigned programs by informing current, transfer, international, and prospective students and students minoring in the department;
  • Review student program planning, including course selection and program / Faculty / University requirements;
  • Inform students about prerequisite requirements and course restrictions and introduce them to the advising services available to them;
  • Manage advising appointments, both virtually and in-person, opening appointment times and tracking student requests and inquiries;
  • Monitor the progress of students at risk academically and provide guidance on resources and make referrals to increase the likelihood of student success;
  • Manage the Department’s web pages and social media accounts; develop, maintain and update content; monitor and analyze traffic;
  • and recommend any content changes to increase readership;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners, organizations and Geography and Tourism alumni;
  • Write, design and produce publications and marketing collateral including posters, newsletters, brochures, flyers and other materials, as assigned;
  • Assist in the development of print promotional materials (brochures, posters, newsletters, etc.) for undergraduate and graduate programs;
  • Plan, coordinate and facilitate student orientation, welcome, and onboarding programs, including the SMART Start program, New Student Welcome and Academic Orientation (NSWAO) session and participate in classroom presentations;
  • Represent assigned programs and / or Faculty at student recruitment events;
  • Identify needs for course overrides and provide appropriate decision-makers with the required information to review and make the determination.

What you need to Succeed

  • Undergraduate Degree in a related discipline (, Geography, Tourism Studies, Environmental Studies / Science)
  • Knowledge of a university environment with an appreciation of the value of university education, and of Geography and Tourism Studies in particular;
  • Knowledge of academic advising, including advising models, theories, and techniques, and counselling theories;
  • Understanding the undergraduate course calendar, course offerings, prerequisites, and class scheduling for the Department / Faculty;
  • Knowledge of University regulations, policies, strategic initiatives, programs, services and systems;
  • Knowledge of computer software and systems (including MS Office and competency with spreadsheets, Microsoft Office, word processing, database applications, CRMs, and social media platforms);
  • Excellent production and design skills using Microsoft Office Publisher or Adobe Creative Suite 2 or higher, including Photoshop;
  • knowledge of WordPress or similar content management system;
  • Understanding of co-op and all institutional forms of experiential learning;
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to promote the department’s research, teaching, and community engagement within and beyond the university;
  • Cultural sensitivity and the ability to interact effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds, supporting equity-deserving groups;
  • Excellent active listening skills, verbal, written, and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to coach, mentor and motivate students;
  • Excellent creative problem-solving, organizational, and multi-tasking skills;
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and quickly learn and apply new knowledge to diverse aspects of the position.

Preferred or Asset Skills

  • Undergraduate degree in Geography, Tourism or a related discipline;
  • Knowledge of the organization, roles, policies and regulations of the University;
  • A high degree of familiarity with social media and website management; and
  • Experience developing and executing events.

Salary and Benefit Information

  • Job Grade (K), Salary Scale ($57,400-$98,400)*;
  • Target Hiring Range : $57,400 - $82,000
  • This position includes full comprehensive benefits including tuition waiver.
  • The salary range indicated is representative of all positions evaluated at this level. Actual salary is determined by assessing related skills, experience, internal equity and market competitiveness, subject to available budget.
