About the Role
CASA Classrooms are CASA’s new model for school-based mental health service. The program addresses the need for services closer to students by bridging a child’s mental health and school needs, through a coordinated approach by a mental health team and a teacher.
CASA Classrooms are delivered in partnership with the Government of Alberta, community partners and school divisions.
Reporting to the Clinical Manager, the Mental Health Therapist works collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team, school administrators, community service providers and caregivers to provide timely, wrap-around clinical service delivery in the Comprehensive School-Based Mental Health Program in partnership with First Nation and Métis schools.
The Mental Health Therapist will :
- Conduct comprehensive bio-psycho-social-spiritual mental health assessments of assigned preschoolers, children and adolescents.
- Formulate diagnoses as appropriate, using the DSM-V and / or other diagnostic tools.
- Work closely with Elders and Knowledge Keepers from the communities we serve.
- Facilitate psychoeducational group sessions on general mental health topics for school staff, caregivers and community service providers.
- Adhere to the policies and procedures of First Nation and Métis school division partners.
- Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, professionals, caregivers, Elders and Knowledge Keepers to develop holistic patient care plans and support successful transitions.
- Participate in school and community events, including traditional ceremonies and cultural events.
- Provide coverage for the Kipohtakaw Education Centre Mental Health Therapist.
Qualifications
- Graduate degree in clinical psychology, social work (with psycho-social intervention designation), occupational therapy or nursing.
- Active registration and in good standing with a professional college identified under the Health Professions Act.
- A minimum of two years clinical practice in child and family mental health and / or youth addictions.
- Access to cultural and spiritual knowledge and training is provided.
Conditions of Employment
- A satisfactory Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Search. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.
- A satisfactory Child Intervention Check.
- Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or exemption on the basis of a protected legal ground.
- Must maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA) and be physically able to perform all interventions.
