Queen’s University invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean, Faculty of Health Sciences, and CEO, Southeastern Ontario Academic Medical Organization (SEAMO).

The appointment, for an initial five-year term, begins July 1, 2025.

The Faculty of Health Sciences consists of three schools : the School of Medicine (SOM), School of Nursing (SON), and the School of Rehabilitation Therapy (SRT).

The three schools work collaboratively at the executive table, in budget processes, in fundraising, and in interdisciplinary programming.

The Faculty is home to 794 employees, 600 full time faculty members and 480 SOM academic clinicians who are responsible for much of the medical care delivered in Kingston.

The Faculty has approximately 1107 adjunct faculty, consisting primarily of clinicians, who work as teachers and mentors to students in hospitals and community health organizations.

The Dean is also the CEO and Governor of SEAMO, reporting to its Board of Governors. The position of CEO of SEAMO has been an important part of the Dean’s role at Queen’s.

SEAMO oversees the oldest comprehensive Alternative Funding Plan in Ontario, supporting 13 Departments and 450+ physicians in the delivery of outstanding healthcare, excellence in research and education, and the transformation of academic medicine in Southeastern Ontario.

Reporting to the Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic), the Dean will foster an environment in which world-class research and excellence in teaching and clinical practice flourish, and where students, faculty, and staff thrive.

The Dean is responsible for all aspects of the Faculty’s operations, including strategy, budget, human resources, external relations, and fund development.

The Dean also serves as Director of the School of Medicine.

The new Dean will be a respected academic leader, ideally with an MD (or equivalent); an advanced research-based degree is an asset.

A clinician, teacher, and researcher, the Dean will have a significant profile in the national and international medical and health sciences communities, and an exemplary record of academic administration at a top research-intensive institution.

The Dean will inspire intellectual curiosity and creativity, bring an appreciation for the diversity and complexity of disciplines within the Faculty, enhance the student experience, and maximize opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration between programs, units, and Faculties across Queen’s University and in the wider health community.

  • An entrepreneurial spirit and track record of pioneering innovation in programs and revenue sources will be essential. The Dean will have a commitment to advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, Indigeneity and accessibility;
  • a consultative, inclusive, and collegial leadership style; a natural service orientation; excellent communication skills;

and an open and transparent approach that earns trust and respect from all members of the Health Sciences community. Finally, the Dean will bring the credibility and leadership skills to be able to inspire the broader health and clinical communities, within the University, in Kingston, and throughout southeastern Ontario.
