Under the direction of the Technical Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Technologist is responsible for conducting experiments, performing tests and providing results, analysis and reporting.
The Laboratory Technologist is also responsible for maintaining the laboratory, equipment and inventory as well as safely handling, storing and disposing of samples, chemicals and other materials .
This position is considered to be a safety-sensitive position. The Laboratory Technologist role encompasses three levels of seniority based on skillset and experience with Magnum’s various service lines.
Job Responsibilities
- Learn, understand, and apply the basics of cement blends and additives, including calculations.
- Log all field samples and experimental products.
- Complete reports and enter test data, as required.
- Operate and maintain all laboratory equipment and inventory.
- Conduct the safe handling, storage, and disposal of samples, chemicals, and other materials .
- Assist with soil stabilization testing for Magnum’s Infrastructure service line.
- Conduct quality control testing for the lab and field cement samples, including weighing the cement, additives, and water.
- Coordinate internal testing of samples (cement blend formulations) upon request.
- Conduct and complete all lab tests as per departmental SOP’s. Complete and summarize reports and interpret test data.
- Independently conduct soil stabilization testing for Magnum’s Infrastructure service line, maintaining reporting and issuing recommendations, as applicable.
- Obtain and apply a greater understanding of all laboratory maintenance, cement blend calculations, and products, interactions, blends, and operations.
- Maintain, operate, calibrate, and install all equipment in the lab.
- Troubleshoot products and blends, as required.
- Maintain the testing database, ensuring accuracy.
- Assist with maintaining all departmental marketing materials (product pages, blend pages, handbooks).
- Assist with departmental research and development projects. Maintain and update project summaries.
- Perform and act as a backfill on entry-level laboratory tasks.
- Manage and prioritize lab testing for the department, delegating to the team as required.
- Schedule equipment maintenance and track all parts and the associated cost.
- Ensure that all departmental data (test data, SDS database, laboratory testing SOP’s, product information and specifications, lab calculators, etc.
is captured, maintained, and updated regularly.
- Maintain all departmental marketing materials (product pages, blend pages, handbooks) and participate in presentations with the Sales department.
- Review lab reports for accuracy and completeness.
- Conduct training presentations for the post-secondary institutions Magnum participates with.
- Manage departmental research and development projects. Maintain and update project summaries.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of products, interactions, blends, and operations.
- Develop test parameters to evaluate Magnum’s product lines, evaluating opportunities for improvement or efficiencies.
- Assist with soil stabilization testing for Magnum’s Infrastructure service line, as needed.
- Assist with quality control testing for the lab and field cement samples, as needed.
- Carry out quality control checks for the department, as needed.
- Perform and act as a backfill on entry-level and intermediate laboratory tasks.
- Follow all of Magnum’s JSA and Safe Work Procedures.
- Complete and participate in all required safety training, both internal and external.
- Understand and apply Magnum’s QHSE policies and expectations.
- Work with management to improve standard operating procedures and policies.
- Participate in training and development activities.
- Other related duties as required.
Qualifications - Required :
- Diploma or degree in Chemistry, Environmental, or Engineering.
- Progressively responsible experience in a relevant laboratory technologist role, as applicable to the level of role being assigned to.
- Able to work overtime, accommodate a flexible schedule, and participate in an on-call rotation.
- Able to travel to satellite laboratories and act as support to meet the needs of the business.
- Legally eligible to work in the country the role is based out of.
Qualifications - Looking For :

Qualifications - Assets :
- Legally eligible and able to support both our Canadian and U.S. operations, as needed.
- Previous work experience in the oil and gas industry or experience in cementing services.
- Training in OHS including WHMIS, TDG, etc.
