The Centre for Criminology and Sociolegal Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream position in the area of Sociolegal Studies.

The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in the social sciences, humanities, or law, with a focus on sociolegal studies, Indigenous studies, law and society, sociology of law, criminology, legal anthropology, critical security studies or a closely related field by the time of appointment, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths . In particular, we seek a candidate whose areas of expertise span the study of law and society, with a focus in at least one of the following : law, colonialism and decolonization, property and dispossession, culture and power, science and technology studies, critical urbanism, border studies, environmental justice, new technologies (eg.

artificial intelligence and surveillance strategies) and social disparities. The successful candidate must have strong communication skills as well as demonstrated success in the latest developments in the field of sociolegal studies.

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest level and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence and academic promise commensurate with their career stage. Research excellence and academic promise can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked field-relevant journals of international calibre, forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, a strong research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsement from referees of high standing.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through a record of teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
