Surrey Memorial Hospital Internal Medicine Unit Clinical Associate Job Description As a Clinical Associate at the Surrey Memorial Hospital Internal Medicine Unit you will work as a part of an inter-disciplinary team providing acute medical services, working collaboratively with the attending Internist, nursing, and allied health care providers.
You will have an independent practice license with additional training in ER, Hospital Medicine, or Internal Medicine. Ideally you possess excellent clinical skills and are able to perform procedures such as paracentesis, lumbar puncture and thoracentesis.
Current ACLS; ATLS is an asset. Surrey Memorial Hospital and academic campus is a Tertiary Referral Centre and primary hospital for one of the fastest growing communities in BC.
It is the second largest hospital in the province with the province’s busiest Emergency Department, with approximately beds across the site.
Surrey Memorial has a Level I ICU, highly specialized Cardiology services, the region’s only closed stroke unit, Palliative Care Unit, and is a specialized surgical centre.
In the coming months and years, Surrey Memorial will also be the home site for the Fraser Health track of the UBC Internal Medicine Residency program and a number of Fellowship programs.
At present the two General Internal Medicine Units collectively make up 30 funded beds, with ongoing expansion efforts. Each ward is geographically cohorted with dedicated allied health, pharmacist and PCC.
We look after acutely ill medical patients with common chronic medical issues, who require specialized inpatient Internal Medicine.
There are 2 Royal College certified Internal Medicine attending Physicians on each week for each ward, with an additional acute ward and emergency consultant, as well as night call.
Hours : Clinical Associates will rotate through a combination of days and nights, both on weekdays and weekends. 8 : 00-18 : 00 daily (10-hour dayshift) 19 : 00-07 : 00 daily (12-hour nightshift) Responsibilities : Participates in patient rounds under the supervision of the Attending physician (if the CA is a current resident / fellow) along with learners and other care team members.
Assesses the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders, consultations with other services, and responding to changing patient conditions, in consultation with attending staff.
Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, and medication reconciliation as per CPSBC and organizational standards, policies, and guidelines Develops treatment plans in response to changing patient condition, where appropriate and in consultation with attending staff.
Follows through on investigations and consultant recommendations in consultation with the attending staff. Communicates with, and responds in a timely manner to calls from, the nursing staff and other care team members.
Communicates with patients, family members, other consulting services, and trainees concerning patient care plans, as appropriate.
Performs procedures within the scope of their demonstrated competence which may include : paracentesis, thoracentesis, arthrocentesis, lumbar puncture & central line insertion Participates in professional development activities Attends clinical rounds, and other educational / research sessions.
