Kiewit Infrastructure Engineers has an opening for a dynamic Senior Structural Engineer acting as the Structures Lead on upcoming projects.
The rapidly growing Infrastructure Design Department is a multi-faceted division of Kiewit at the leading-edge of the industry, with best-in-class technical expertise focused on the design-build delivery of infrastructure projects.
The candidate should, as a minimum, have extensive experience in permanent bridge design, including the production of bridge plans and specifications.
Ideally, the candidate should have experience specifically with short and medium span bridges, working to BC Ministry and Canadian standards, and be comfortable integrating into a multidisciplinary team to produce constructible and cost-effective solutions.
As the Structures Lead, you will take ownership of the technical output of the structural scope, coordinate with other disciplines, and ensure the design work meets the quality, budget and schedule expected on the project.
The role may include other work on a variety of infrastructure projects across North America, including longer span bridges, walls, industrial, marine structures, and other minor structures (e.
g., temporary works, secondary structures, etc.).
In the permanent design group at KIE, we operate like a design consultancy with one client : Kiewit. As such, we work mostly on Design-Build project, with a particular focus on the progressive design build jobs.

Location
This position will be based out of our Burnaby office location.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the structural engineering scope of work for permanent works design. This includes managing and performing engineering design tasks, coordinating with CADD and construction estimating teams in developing plans, specifications, and estimates for preliminary and final (IFC) design of bridges, walls, industrial structures, marine structures, and other minor structures (temporary works, secondary structures, etc.).
- Leadership and mentorship of other staff.
- Understand technical requirements of projects, identify technical risks, and implement engineering principles to develop solutions.
- Identify, interpret, and apply appropriate design standards and codes; ensure compliance with contract documents.
- Participate in technical meetings and discussions; strategize solutions to complex or unique technical problems.
- Identify technical differentiators and develop schemes for key project pursuits.
- Assistance in recruitment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or greater in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering (Masters Preferred)
- 10+ years’ experience in relevant structural / bridge engineering design
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in at least one province / state, with the ability to obtain registration in the Province of British Columbia.
- Strong all-around theoretical knowledge of structural engineering principles
- Experience with the design of multiple bridge types in concrete and steel, wall systems, and other local structures
- Experience with Design-Build or other alternative delivery methods, preferred.
- Experience with seismic design and analysis, preferred.
- Preferred experience with structural modelling software, i.e. programs such as MIDAS or LUSAS. Experienced user of MS Excel expected, knowledge of drawing software such as AutoCAD or Microstation, and knowledge of programming languages such as VBA or Python a benefit.
- Detailed knowledge of CSA S6. Experience with other codes, such as CSA S16, AASHTO LRFD, AISC, ACI, and other North American design codes preferred.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Strong people skills and an ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Ability to travel as business requires.

Base Compensation : $140,000 - $160,000
