Detailed Overview
Within the context of a client centred model of care, and under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor or designate, performs skilled heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), and refrigeration mechanic work at the journeyman level in the fabrication, installation, alteration, repair and / or service of a refrigeration / cooling or air handling system in compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
Diagnoses and repairs pneumatic, electric, electronic and pressure operated building control systems. Responsibilities Repairs, maintains and installs heating, ventilating and air conditioning on a variety of systems such as pneumatic, electrical and electronic, based on manufacturers' recommendations.
Prepares for work projects by performing operational and safety risk assessments, arranges work schedules with user departments, and assembles supplies, tools and equipment.
Installs and repairs refrigeration systems such as fridges, freezers, coolers and ice machines. Installs motors, controls and switches, and threads piping for gas and other fluids.
Repairs, maintains, calibrates and adjusts a variety of control systems such as electrical, electronic, pneumatic, and pressure operated systems.
Operates and programs heating, ventilating and air conditioning and refrigeration equipment such as Building Automation Computer Systems.
Performs preventative maintenance on heating, ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration and control systems by performing duties such as replacing bearings and filters, checking fluid and refrigerant levels and cleaning components.
Performs air balancing tests by using equipment such as velometers and static pressure equipment. Performs mechanical repairs on general and specialized equipment such as compressors, steam valves, supply and exhaust fans, pumps and sterilizing equipment.
Installs, tests, maintains and repairs gas lines specific to HVAC equipment in accordance with BC Gas Safety Code Reviews work requests and consults with user departments regarding specifications and other project requirements;
interprets blueprints, drawings and specifications in order to determine the materials and equipment required; calculates materials and labour in estimating cost of projects and makes recommendations.
Maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment and tools, completes related reports and records, and recommends purchase of supplies and equipment.
Assigns work tasks to designated staff and provides related training and orientation. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements.
Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education and Experience Certificate of Apprenticeship or Trades Qualification Certificate as a journeyman Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic or equivalent trade, Class B level Gas Fitter's License with an electrical endorsement recognized by the Province of B.
C. Two years' recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Skills and Abilities Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to deal with others effectively. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and specifications. Ability to organize work.
Ability to operate related equipment. Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
