Job Description
Sinai Health is looking for a Safety Specialist to support our Occupational Health & Safety team at our Mount Sinai Hospital Campus.
The Safety Specialist will support Sinai Health in ensuring compliance with Occupational Health & Safety legislation and avoidance of financial penalties through hazard identification risk assessments, development and delivery of training and education tools, program and policy development, program monitoring, auditing and inspecting, performing physical demands analyses for newly created hospital positions, and responding to staff safety concerns.
Sinai Health is undergoing a major renovation project (Renew Sinai Phase 3A) that will result in the development of one third of the Mount Sinai Hospital site located at University Avenue.
This exciting development will result in a state of the art Perioperative Department, Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Inpatient Surgical Unit, and several support areas.
As part of the successful implementation of this major and critical project, the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) department is actively partnering with various stakeholders to manage the Constructor, Contractor, and Service Provider Safety Management Program and ensure a healthy and safe workplace.
In this role you will :
- Build relationships with all internal and external stakeholders to keep pace with Phase 3A developments participates in related committees as required
- Gain a thorough understanding of all operational environments, the Mount Sinai Hospital site in particular as it relates to Phase 3A
- Provide support in the management and maintenance of various components of the Sinai Health Constructor, Contractor and Safety Provider Safety Management program including but not limited to participating in the activity permit process, construction site hoarding reviews, project site decommissioning and preoccupancy inspections, construction contractor health and safety orientation and other related activities as required
- Provide guidance and advice to departments on the interpretation and application of policies, procedures, applicable legislation as they relate to Phase 3A
- Conduct in-depth research to support issue resolution, analyze data and create reports and summaries to support Phase 3A planning
- Improves operational efficiency by identifying and recommending new or improved policies and procedures as they relate to Phase 3A
- Take a lead role in reviewing Phase 3A activity tracking and reporting for the portfolio, collaborating with key members of the interprofessional team e.
g., Operational Readiness and Transition Planning, Capital Planning, Building Services, Infection Control, etc.) on requests for information
- Develop end user documentation and provides support and training for departments and team members regarding Phase 3A action plans, processes, and procedures
- Monitor and analyzes trends and keeps apprised of new or revised legislation to maintain and enhance current plans, policies and procedures anticipates the impact of changes on the organization and promotes legislative compliance and best practices
- Provide input into Sinai Health wide changes to promote compliance with OH&S laws
- Develop, communicate and implement occupational health and safety programs, audits and evaluates programs and uses audit results to revise existing programs to ensure compliance with legislative requirements
- Share best practices within the health care community and other occupational sectors
- Represent Sinai Health in dealing with government representatives and enforcement agencies, such as the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Health & Long Term Care, Public Health Ontario, and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and coordinates appropriate responses on behalf of the organization
- Provide core occupational hygiene and safety services (e.g., risk assessments, occupational hygiene investigations, sampling and monitoring, spill and emergency response, workplace violence prevention, physical demands analyses, selection and use of personal protective equipment, occupational health and safety training, etc.)
- Proactively identifies workplace hazards such as biological agents, chemical agents, physical agents, and safety issues, evaluates the potential for staff exposure to these workplace hazards and assesses the risk to staff and others within the organization, assesses the need for interventions to comply with occupational health, safety or environmental laws, and determines control measures to eliminate or minimize the risk to staff and the organization.
- Ensure evidence based solutions are implemented to address hazards and advance occupational health and safety best practices (e.
g., the implementation of engineering controls such as local exhaust ventilation, laboratory safety, waste management, ergonomic interventions, etc.)
- Complies with Sinai Health’s occupational health and safety requirements, policies, procedures and safe work practices to ensure health and safety at work
- Participate in education related to the potential or actual hazards in the workplace and the precautions that must be followed to protect for health and safety
- Promptly reports all work-related incidents to the leadership team and participates in the investigation of incidents to assist Sinai Health with identifying appropriate action to prevent a recurrence
- Perform other duties related to the positions as required

Job Requirements
Mandatory
- Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline from a recognized educational institution
- Minimum of 3 years of practical experience in applied occupational hygiene and safety
Preferred
- Master’s level degree in Applied Science, Occupational and / or Environmental Health preferred
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation preferred
- Direct experience with construction projects an asset
- Health care experience preferred
Skills and Knowledge
- Expert, specialized knowledge of occupational hygiene and safety principles
- In depth understanding of health, safety and environmental requirements in the Ontario and Canadian jurisdictions
- In depth knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations including Construction Regulations
- Knowledge of accident causation theory and applied interventions
- Highly computer literate, with proficiency in MS Office
- Demonstrated customer service focus models collaborative, cross portfolio engagement to build consensus and create solutions to complex issues
- Excellent problem solving, analytical and conceptual thinking skills
- Self-starter who sets priorities and drives deliverables to execution with minimal supervision able to anticipate and proactively respond to requirements based on prior experience
