The Director supports the work of the Executive Director, Budget and Resource Planning, and the Budget Department, focusing primarily on budgeting and analysis.

This role also assists with year-end reporting as needed.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Budget and Resource Planning, and working with the Budget Team, the Director participates in all budget functions of the organization.

The Director is actively involved in strategic planning for all financial resources, coordinating the annual operating budget, and developing a budget stewardship strategy that enables accurate budgeting and forecasting.

The Director collaborates with senior leaders in preparing the annual budget and assists with budget functions. The role includes managing and developing the organization’s annual budget and long-term financial strategy across all funds.

Given the high level of responsibility in developing organizational planning and policy, the decisions of the Director influence and impact the entire organization.

As a key member of the management team, the Director will demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring these principles remain central to medium- and long-term strategic planning for the department, including staffing plans and performance indicators.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Working with the Executive Director, the incumbent assists in preparing the organization’s annual budget (covering operating, ancillary, capital, research, trust, endowment, etc.).
  • Responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the preparation of financial components for the organization’s annual budget and multi-year financial plans;

develops guidelines, instructions, and templates for these initiatives.

Conducts high-level research and analysis to assist the Executive Director in developing a budget-stewarding strategy that enhances financial awareness across the organization.

Serves as a primary contact for budget support, analyzing departmental budget requests, adjudicating straightforward requests

  • Regularly provides budget information and analytical support to department managers and other stakeholders.
  • Analyzes and suggests improvements for all budgeting and planning methods, systems, and procedures within the organization.
  • Implements forecasting systems to accurately predict financial results.
  • Initiates enhancements and innovations for budgeting and costing techniques.
  • Ensures compliance with organizational financial policies, generally accepted accounting principles, and reporting requirements from the Province of Ontario and the Federal Government.
  • Builds an effective team by planning, prioritizing, and managing the work of employees, providing strategic and tactical advice, guidance, and coaching.

Identifies staffing needs, participates in staffing committees, and makes effective recommendations on employee selection

Qualifications and Skills

  • Undergraduate degree in business or a related field, combined with a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) or a Professional Accounting designation.
  • Several years’ experience managing finances in complex environments, with a focus on budget development and management.
  • Strong proficiency in modern budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling, along with advanced skills in preparing management reports and business plans.
  • Thorough knowledge of current accounting principles.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience with proven leadership and team development abilities to manage a skilled professional team.
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, including advanced Excel modeling.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
