Summary of the role
The mechanical design technician provides detailed drawings, using CAD / CAM development tools, during various stages ranging from bid preparation to factory manufacture and on-site installation.
He or she works in collaboration with engineers during the design process for heavy mechanical equipment (dam gates, hoists, embedded parts, etc.).
The following responsibilities form the core of this role in our Canadian team.
This position is based at the ANDRITZ office in Boucherville (3 days in the office and 2 days at home). In addition, short visits to hydroelectric plants across Canada may be required (a few times a year).
- Find the information you need to develop your concept by studying specifications, available plans or existing concepts;
- Research and select the parts and components used in its design;
- Develop and prepare 3D models from preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, specifications and other data;
- Prepare detailed drawings of heavy mechanical equipment (dam gates, hoists, embedded parts, etc.), tender drawings, shop drawings, site drawings and factory assembly drawings;
- Participate to the design process in collaboration with engineers;
- Assist engineers with detailed design tasks using CAD / CAM development tools;
- Select components for heavy mechanical assembly design;
- Check plans for compliance with existing guidelines, code requirements and other regulations;
- Meet deadlines;
- Ensure that its concepts and drawings are feasible in terms of the company's requirements and manufacturing processes;
- Determine dimensional tolerances required for manufacturing;
- Produce a list of materials on the drawings;
- Answer questions and requests for clarification from various stakeholders;
- Define functional dimensioning and geometric tolerancing of components;
- Participate in team meetings;
- Check drawings for compliance with customer specifications and design data;
- Perform any other related tasks.

- Diploma of college studies (DCS) in mechanical engineering, or equivalent;
- Five (5) to Ten (10) years of relevant experience;
- Advanced knowledge of SolidWorks;
- Attention to quality and detail;
- Good analytical and concentration skills;
- Spirit of initiative;
- Excellent written and spoken French;
- Functional written and spoken English;
- Ability to work alone and as part of a team;
- Knowledge of AutoCAD and Inventor (an asset);
- Knowledge of welding and machining (an asset);
- Experience in heavy mechanical equipment design (an asset);
- Experience in hydroelectricity (an asset).
