OVERVIEW

The Adult Mental Health Outpatient Program at Michael Garron Hospital (MGH) offers a range of services for those living with a Mental Illness.

The Supervisor, Adult Mental Health Outpatient and Emergency Department (ED) Crisis will oversee all Adult Outpatient programs including MHEAZ and ED Crisis work.

This individual will play a key role in ensuring patient flow from the ED to the Inpatient unit and Outpatient services.

Reporting to the Manager of Mental Health and Substance Use, the Supervisor functions as an active member of the inter-professional team and works closely with Management and Administrative teams to provide supervisory leadership to ensure care is delivered using a health equity lens and according to best practice, relevant College requirements as wellas applicable program standards.

Monitoring and supporting optimal care through regular supervision, the Supervisor offers leadership, mentorship, training and education opportunities for all members of the team.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee and support daily operations of Adult Mental Health Outpatient and ED Crisis including scheduling of staff and management of onsite resources / supplies as well as responding to emergent needs.
  • Lead, support and facilitate team huddles / discussions to ensure optimal team functioning and the provision of high quality, interdisciplinary care that aligns with current best practices in substance use and mental health care.
  • In collaboration with the program Manager, develop and implement strategies to support optimal team functioning to ensure excellence in inter-professional care and a positive work environment.
  • Direct and coordinate the seamless flow of clients within the Mental Health Program from Emergency Department to Inpatient unit and Outpatient services.
  • Supports with ED Crisis assessments during surge periods or staffing gaps as needed to maintain smooth patient flow.
  • Ensure program operates in accordance with all health and safety requirements and offer a safe, inclusive,respectful and welcoming space for clients.
  • In collaboration with the Manager participate in recruitment, supervision, orientation, evaluation and performance management of staff.
  • Monitor the reporting of program incidents using a quality improvement lens to minimize risks and to identify opportunities for improved service delivery and care.
  • Respond to community concerns and complaints in collaboration / consultation with Manager.
  • Participate in the collective bargaining process, grievance procedures, and other committees as a member of management team.
  • Conduct regular meetings with individual staff to review their work with clients, assess clinical performance, address challenges and provide support / feedback.
  • Oversee completion of all required documentation in a timely manner and ensure it meets all organizational, legislative, and professional requirements where appropriate.
  • Work with Manager(s) to develop and implement a quality improvement work plan to ensure program adherenceto relevant standards.
  • Develop, maintain, review and revise program policies as necessary.
  • Create a climate of continuous learning and professional development, including the identification and coordination of team-based training opportunities.
  • Share On-Call responsibilities.

EDUCATION

  • Diploma or University degree in a health care related field, Nursing or MSW preferred.
  • Current registration with respective College, College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all relevant legislation, including the Mental Health Act and PHIPA.
  • Demonstrated knowledge / training in program management, team leadership and clinical supervision.
  • Advanced training / knowledge in a range of therapeutic modalities and approaches to substance use and mental health, crisis prevention / intervention, harm reduction principles, strength based, trauma-informed and anti-oppressive practice an asset.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum five (5) years experience working with adults living with mental health and substance use challenges in a community or hospital based setting.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience in a clinical leadership / management role.
  • Demonstrated experience in previous program development, administrative and supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to liaise effectively and operate collaboratively with community and hospital-based stakeholders.
  • Sound knowledge and experience working with adults with histories of trauma, abuse, self-harm and / or suicidal behaviour.
  • Strong ability to work / lead in an inter-professional team environment.
  • Willing and capable of making time-sensitive decisions to ensure the safe operations of all program sites.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including conflict management and de-escalation techniques.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer technology and various software applications.
  • Good work and attendance record required.
