As the Senior Engineer, Protection and Control (ARS) you will work with a specialized technical group of engineers responsible for ENMAX Power Corporation’s Protection & Control (P&C) needs.
You will have the opportunity to develop and implement protection philosophies, schemes and relay settings used in ENMAX’s Transmission and Distribution systems to meet ARS Alberta Reliability Standards.
Mentorship and guidance to junior staff and internal stakeholders will ensure quality protection of transmission, distribution, and network assets, supporting customer requirements.
Major Responsibilities :
Develop and review relay settings for transmission, substation, and distribution protection
Maintain documentation of Protection and Control relay calculations and settings files
Ensure customer P&C requests are answered accurately and professionally within 10 business days
Provide technical support to field P&C crews
Develop and review protection studies and perform fault analysis calculations to ensure proper coordination of substation relays
Review and approve protection requirements for primary metered customers, distributed energy resource interconnections and large load additions to distribution circuits
Support the investigation of protection performance during disturbances and for other operational concerns. Help prepare reports with recommendations for submission to internal and external stakeholders
Provide technical support in the area of distribution protection to internal and external stakeholders
Help coordinate the maintenance and asset management of substation based distribution assets
Support the operation of the Distribution Automation system
Support and help ensure compliance to Alberta Reliability Standards (ARS)
Participate in the Senior-On-Call rotation including management of incident response as part of the ENMAX System Control Centre and Emergency Response Plan.
Education Required :
BSc. in Electrical Engineering
P.Eng status with The Association of Professionals in Engineering and Geoscientists in Alberta (APEGA)
Qualifications & Experience :
10+ years’ experience with the majority being in utility protection and control and have a few years of protection setting development experience.
Background developing protection settings for transmission lines, transformers, bus, breaker and feeders as per ENMAX common practices
Proficient with coordination review and familiar with Arc Flash mitigation
Experience with specific software tools (CYME, CYMETCC, CAPE, ArcFM, Mathcad, IPS)
Competent with coordination and fault calculation software and Mathcad report writer
Well versed in relay and testing software : SEL, GE, Hitachi, Omicron etc.
Strong understanding of application industry standards such as IEEE, IEC, NERC, ARS and CSA

Enjoys problem solving and working in a project environment, meeting project milestones and completion dates
Uses good judgment in making decisions and generating solutions that are compliant with ENMAX policies and standards

Location : This role will be part of our hybrid (home and office) work force with office workspace located at ENMAX Place (141 - 50th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB).
You will work from home on Mondays and Fridays and in the office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
