The Medical Director, Medical Staff Contracts & Compensation is a co-leadership position that shares responsibility for ensuring high quality services.
Reporting to the Executive Medical Director, Medical and Academic Affairs and working as dyad partner with the Director, Medical Staff Compensation, Contracts and Practice Design, the medical Director is responsible for providing collaborative leadership in the development of new Medical Staff service models and contracts.
The Medical Director works in partnership with the Director of Medical Staff Compensation, Contracts & Practice Design to lead and support :
- Strategic allocation planning for compensation budget with respect to APP and MOCAP contracts, including chairing the MOCAP review committee.
- Development of service model design activities for medical staff
- In co-leadership with the Director, supports contract negotiations with medical staff.
- Development and implementation of innovative and creative approaches to support the delivery of high quality, efficient clinical services in alignment with the organization’s strategic priorities.
SCOPE :
- Liaise with Island Health’s clinical programs, geographical structures and departments as required to support the development of clinical service models, contract negotiations and resource allocation.
- Manages fiscal resources in a financially responsible manner consistent with the overall goals of the organization.
- Champions equitable distribution of resources across the health authority to meet the needs of all patients in Island health.
- Fosters collaboration and effective working relationships with stakeholders that promote cooperative goals in an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.
- Applies superior conflict-management skills and expertise to persuade and negotiate effective resolution of issues / disputes.

- Aligned with Island Health strategic goals and objectives, and with the program goals and objectives of Medical and Academic Affairs.
- Promotes collaboration and effective working relationships with stakeholders that promote cooperative goals in an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.
- Delivered in an effective and efficient manner.
SERVICE REQUIREMENTS :
Leadership : Co-leads and oversees activities to ensure program service delivery is efficient, effective and integrated across Island Health sites;
Links with appropriate Departmental Medical Leaders to address matters of physician governance, including professional medical practice issues.
Operations & Quality : Establishes processes and structures to engage physicians and staff in continuous quality improvement of service delivery;
Monitors program budget and performance jointly with co-leader and makes course corrections when necessary; Ensures appropriate investigation and resolution of program-related Patient Safety Learning System and Patient Care Quality Office events.
- Change Management : Co-develops and implements change management plans to engage and support physicians and staff through change
- Informatics : Oversees activities that advance technology and data use to improve service delivery using the Electronic Health Records (EHR) in collaboration with the Quality Systems team.
- Planning : Assesses, monitors and anticipates program resource needs and works with medical leaders and administrative leaders to prioritize these needs within available resources.
