The Opportunity :
Our client, a highly regarded Vancouver Island-based co-operative known for its mission to build strong communities and benefit its member-owners, is seeking a VP, People and Culture.
Operating 17 retail fuel and convenience centres, 10 liquor stores, commercial card lock and home heating outlets, and a full-sized food store, with a team of over 470.
Generating approximately $300 million in annual revenue, the Co-op is financially strong, locally owned, and proudly shares profits with its 116,000 member-owners, community, and staff.
In this role, you'll lead the HR team, ensuring the organization's current and future needs are met as they expand and diversify.
Reporting directly to the CEO, you will advise senior leadership and the Board on strategic HR initiatives, including organizational design, workforce planning, engagement, learning and development, diversity, and inclusion.
What You'll Be Doing :
- Lead the implementation of HR strategies that align with the co-op's short and long-term business goals and priorities.
- Develop and execute business improvements using best practices and performance metrics to drive continuous improvement.
- Ensure proactive regulatory compliance with employment standards, human rights, and health and safety laws.
- Create, monitor, and manage the annual department plan and related budget to meet organizational goals.
- Support the Board of Directors and the HR Committee with strategic initiatives and reports.
- Oversee recruitment strategy and planning, including workforce planning, forecasting, and succession planning.
- Ensure effective onboarding processes to welcome and integrate new employees, fostering a smooth transition into the organization.
- Implement leadership development practices, including talent reviews, succession planning, and performance management.
- Develop and oversee programs to enhance employee skills, knowledge, and recognize outstanding contributions.
- Maintain strict privacy and confidentiality protocols to protect employee information and ensure compliance with legal standards.
What You'll Need to Be Successful :
- Undergraduate degree in human resources, business, commerce, or related field.
- Minimum 10 years of HR experience, with at least 8 years in senior management.
- CPHR designation and advanced knowledge of HR functions, occupational health and safety, and employee engagement.
- Proven experience in a high-growth, rapidly changing environment, leading a team, and developing talent through coaching and mentorship.
- Strong ability to balance strategic, operational, and tactical objectives, and build trusting relationships at all levels.
- Excellent communication skills, experience in budgeting and forecasting, and proficiency with Microsoft 365 and HRIS / payroll software.
