The Role
The Drilling Optimization Engineer will work with a diverse set of stakeholders at Pason, including Account Managers, R&D, product managers, and our clients to help drive continuous improvement in their drilling operations.
This will be done by analyzing our clients' drilling data, providing technical recommendations / insights, and creating Key Performance Indicator (KPI) and similar reports to better inform end-users in how they utilize our products.
The individual will be exposed to a wide array of Pason products and end-users, with heavy emphasis Pason’s drilling automation and optimization applications.
The Team
The Drilling Optimization team works to improve drilling efficiency for Pason's customers through products such as DAS, Toolface Control, AutoDriller, PvT, Gas Analyzer, Drilling Mud Analyzer and the DataHub.
Located in Calgary, AB, the team looks to provide technical analysis and insights on the products mentioned above to assist our customers in realizing the full benefit of these products for our North American and International customers.
This is done through KPI performance reports, real time monitoring, training, and recommendations communicated to the customers.
The team also works with a wide variety of teams within Pason to help drive the development and sale of these products to the customer.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor key product trials (drilling automation, gas analysis, mud management, etc.) and prepare KPI Reports / presentations with insights focused on improving drilling efficiencies with the products.
- Work with drilling data to generate impactful KPI’s and visualizations in business intelligence tools to help describe drilling performance to customers.
- Maintain high degree of accuracy and detail in analyses and presentations to ensure the standard of Pason’s support is upheld.
- Work with internal stakeholders to further develop Pason’s drilling automation and KPI technology to better suit the customers’ needs.
- Assist other support teams in troubleshooting customer issues as they pertain to Pason’s drilling automation and KPI products.
- Travel to client locations (office, rig, and virtual) for project preparation, product training, and performance presentations may be required.
10% of travel outside Calgary expected).
Assist the Account Management team by analyzing client data to help grow revenue in product lines including drilling optimization products, gas analysis, data consumption, and well control.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Understanding of fundamental drilling practices and industry vernacular via prior field and office experience.
- Strong organization and time management skills required to prioritize tasks and deadlines related to concurrent projects will be the norm.
- Problem solver with critical thinking, analytical, data-centric, and detail-oriented biases.
- Comfort presenting to diverse audiences, internal and external, on a regular basis.
- Must be able to communicate technical information clearly and professionally to internal and external parties.
- Self-starter, with the ability to work well in both team and individual settings.
Pre-employment Conditions

Experience
- 3-7 years of experience in the Oil and Gas Industry 2 years minimum drilling experience1 year minimum field experience
- Is licensed as a EIT or P.Eng with APEGA, or has the ability to obtain.
- Experience with Directional Drilling principles is an asset
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, particularly in Excel
- Experience in using BI Software tools (ie. Spotfire, PowerBI, etc.)
- Exposure to JIRA, Confluence, Splunk, Python and Enverus DrillingInfo are a plus
- Sales, marketing, customer service, and related experience would be an asset
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical, Petroleum, Mechanical or related Engineering or related field from an accredited University.
Other engineering disciplines will be considered in conjunction with relevant work experience.
