Reports To : Vice President, Legal and Corporate Secretary

Position Summary : The Senior Legal Counsel has responsibility for assisting the Legal Department in matters relating to real estate, corporate and commercial transactions and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

There is one employee reporting to the Senior Legal Counsel.

Responsibilities :

  • Provide legal advice to CAPREIT and its affiliates
  • Assist the Vice President, Legal and Corporate Secretary with the overall management of the legal function and legal affairs of CAPREIT and its affiliates
  • Review and draft contracts to support the Operations team, Operation support functions and corporate services departments
  • Work with the Operations team, Operations support functions and corporate services departments to draft template agreements, notices, releases, and other standard documents and respond to queries on an ad hoc basis
  • Work with the Development team on projects, expropriations, easements and other municipal, land-use planning and development related matters
  • Assist with managing disputes and litigation claims
  • Advise on enterprise-wide projects
  • Assist in preparing reports and memorandums on legal matters
  • Work with external counsel, as required
  • Other duties as may be required

Skills & Requirements :

  • Law degree from a recognized Canadian law school
  • At least 4 years experience post-call at a law firm or in-house counsel position with knowledge of corporate, commercial and real estate law.
  • Must be able to identify issues, keep abreast of legislative changes and legal developments and maintain good connections with key external counsel and firms
  • High level of organization
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Qualifications :

  • Licensed lawyer, Ontario bar, with 4+ years of experience post-call
  • Strong, adaptable and flexible team player
  • Ability to speak French and / or Dutch is an asset
