These positions will allow for Indigenous culture, knowledge and ways of knowing, as well as two-eyed seeing, to be implemented system-wide, in all schools.

As the OCSB is committed to reconciliation, these roles provide an entry point for deeper knowledge and understanding of the truth and will allow the OCSB to intentionally move toward the path of reconciliation in collaboration with partners.

Reporting to the Superintendent of Leadership & Parent Engagement and under the direction of the Indigenous Cultural Advisor and the Indigenous Education Coordinator, the Indigenous Cultural Guides :

will support Indigenous students and families in their designated families of schools

provide cultural guidance in their designated families of schools, as well as throughout the system

provide restorative practices in their designated families of schools

will create a deeper sense of community and well-being amongst Indigenous students and families throughout the OCSB

will be versed in cultural teachings and traditions and be able to share teachings and Indigenous cultures, not only in their designated families of schools, but throughout the system.

Position Details :

  • Collaborate with all school board staff to identify and provide support to Indigenous students and their families in a variety of ways;
  • Develop needs assessments and intervention strategies for Indigenous students, including plans for transition support, graduation and career attainment;
  • Collaborate with administrators, teachers and parents / guardians to respond to all barriers that affect the engagement, well-being and learning of Indigenous students;

Create and plan additional opportunities for Indigenous students to be engaged in cultural activities that may not be offered by the school or school board (i.

  • e. long weekends, extended breaks, etc.);
  • Liaise with school ISA (Indigenous Student Association) leads and ISA teams and help to coordinate and manage school ISA’s;
  • Establish / maintain relationships with various service agencies serving Indigenous communities;
  • Prepare reports and statistics on program progression and outcomes;
  • Prepare individual, group and class workshops and presentations to deliver cultural content, restorative practices content and professional development;

Report to Cultural advisor and Coordinator on school climate, staff cultural competency, trauma informed pedagogy, Indigenous student success, schools following protocols, etc.

Facilitate restorative practices in schools for things like : conflict resolution, community building, educational purposes and sharing of Indigenous cultures.

Required Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills :

College diploma in counselling, psychology, social work or equivalent

Three years of directly related experience working with Indigenous students

Life experience deeply rooted in local Indigenous communities

Community connections with a variety of individuals and organizations (i.e. ability to grow our circle)

Understanding the diversity and composition of local Indigenous communities - specifically Algonquin protocols

Carries traditional cultural teachings from their own community / family

Ability to public speak and engage staff and students

Ability to plan events for large groups of people

Awareness of local community resources and the ability to support students / families in accessing and navigating the resources

Knowledge / awareness of Jordan’s Principle / Child First Initiative

Demonstrated ability to be a mentor, advisor and advocate for students / families

Excellent organizational, collaboration and communication skills

Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends to meet program needs

The equivalent combination of education and lived experience may be considered

Lived experience

Access to a vehicle, as school sites are across Ottawa

Understanding of restorative practices or willingness to be formally trained in restorative practices

In addition, the following will be considered an asset :

Ability to speak French, Anishinaabemowin, or other Indigenous languages

Formal training in restorative practices through the IIRP

Status : There are eight (8), temporary, full-time (1.0), twelve (12) month term positions.

Salary : Annual salary of $57,772.

Dates : These 12 month positions will start from the date of hire.

Location : Supporting K-12 schools in the Ottawa Catholic School Board. Each position would be working within 2 specific Families of schools.
