This position is accountable for all functions and activities relating to the payroll department.Responsible for the payroll functions for Calgary Co-op as well as subsidiary companies Beacon Pharmacy, Community Natural Foods and Willow Park Wines & Spirits.
Responsibilities :
Responsible for the maintenance of all employee payroll information including : Accurate and timely payroll information in accordance with government regulations and the collective agreement Accurate and complete payroll files Processing of payroll costing and statistical hours to the general ledger Remittance of statutory deductions, union dues, Superannuation, Workers Compensation, and Blue Cross benefit premiums by due dates.
Regulatory reporting requirements including Records of Employment, termination records for Blue Cross, Superannuation, etc.
Submission of bi-weekly payroll deposits. Maintenance of vacation and sick leave accrual balances Reconciling and balancing YTD payroll balances Preparation of T4’s Handling all internal and external payroll inquiries
- Maintain strong operating controls and policies / procedures / systems relating to the payroll function.
- Provide training to centre personnel (managers and supervisors) as required.
- Maintain balance sheet reconciliations relating to the payroll function.
- Preparation of financial analysis and reports relating to the department.
- Identify and implement payroll changes required resulting from new collective agreements, Oracle upgrades / patches, year-end updates, etc.
- Complete WCB annual return
- Manage the development and implementation of new business processes and systems relating to the department.
- Assist with special projects and participate on various committees as required
- Responsible for all employee relations including staff recruitment, training and development, performance management and expectations, performance reviews, development action plans, discipline, recognition, terminations, administration and enforcement of human resource policies, security and union contract compliance.
- Provide leadership and direction and maintaining the highest standard for department confidentiality.
- Provide leadership in the areas of Occupational Heath and Safety (OH&S) including participate in OH&S activities, ensuring employees are knowledgeable about and comply with OH&S policies, procedures and legislation, assist in identifying unhealthy, unsafe situations and ensure corrective action is taken.
Minimum Qualifications :
- Completion of Level 2 Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) in the CPA Certified Payroll Manager program or equivalent combination of experience and education.
- 3 years managerial / supervisory experience
- Advanced computer skills in Excel and Word.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and decision making skills.
- Ability to organize, plan and control with a minimum of supervision.
Desirable Qualifications :
- CPA Certified Payroll Manager (CPM) designation or equivalent combination of experience and education.
- 6 years managerial / supervisory experience
- Oracle Payroll experience
- Kronos time capture experience
- Retail industry experience
