With the impending retirement of its current, APEGA is set to search for its next leader. The RCEO successor will inherit a well-functioning organization with 10 branches across the province.
APEGA serves more than 69,000 members with the help of a dedicated group of volunteers, numbering over 1700.The organization is recognized across Canada as a leader in professional self-regulation and has cultivated productive relationships with key stakeholders, including the Government of Alberta.
Standing on a solid foundation, APEGA’s next RCEO will be future focused to manage the inherent challenges and opportunities resulting from a growing and a changing landscape in Alberta.
Reporting to APEGA Council, the RCEO provides strategic leadership and operational oversight to APEGA and to the profession, on behalf of Council, its members, and the public, based on the primary objective of protecting the public through the effective licensing and regulation of the Engineering and Geoscience professions in Alberta.
The RCEO has executive responsibility for all APEGA outcomes, outputs, and activities that impact the professions and plays the most significant role in ensuring that all divisions and program areas support the legislative requirements and perform within established protocols in accordance with the .
Key Responsibilities
Stakeholder Relations and Representing APEGA
- Represent APEGA to its stakeholders in a manner that actively promotes respect for APEGA, and the public interest mandate it delivers.
- Develop and maintain an excellent working relationship with the Government of Alberta to ensure APEGA’s continued relevance and value to Albertans.
- Nurture a collaborative relationship with the Association of Science and Engineering Technologists (ASET) in accordance with the joint commitments outlined under the EGP Act
- Foster collaboration and consultation between APEGA and the educational institutions that prepare APEGA’s future members.
Strategic and Operational Leadership
- Provide operational and performance oversight of the organization ensuring all APEGA staff understand their vital role in maintaining the framework and systems that deliver effective, efficient, member-engaged, self-regulation in the public interest.
- In collaboration with the Executive Leadership Team, develop business performance metrics for the organization.
- Maintain and grow investment from APEGA’s volunteer pool.
- In accordance with requirements as a statutory board, the RCEO will ensure that the practices of engineering and geoscience in Alberta are upheld to the highest level with public safety as the top concern.
- Practice effective leadership of people by attracting, engaging, developing, coaching, growing, and retaining a cohesive, high-performing team.
Council Relations & Risk Management
- Lead Council through the strategic planning process, then implementing and monitoring the finalized plan.
- Ensure Council is informed on all matters related to its accountability to the Government of Alberta as it relates to key legislation such as Bill 17, the Red Tape Reduction Act, the EGP Act, and the PGA.
- Bring forward and recommend policy initiatives for Council consideration.
- Implement, monitor, and share with Council an enterprise risk management program; keep Council informed of any vulnerabilities if / when they arise.
- Oversee annual budgets in support of the Strategic Plan and provide regular reporting to Council on material progress towards both strategic and operational objectives.
Desired Education & Experience :
- Professional Engineer or Geoscientist registered with APEGA (or eligible for professional membership in APEGA)
- 5+ years of executive experience in the broad areas of engineering and / or geoscience including strategic and operational development, direction and oversight with significant human resource and budgetary responsibility of complex organizations or entities functioning in a regulated environment.
- Experience engaging with significant and diversified stakeholder groups (e.g., boards, committees) on regulatory processes or environments.
