The West Vancouver Community Services Department is currently seeking a permanent full-time Youth Outreach Worker to join our highly qualified team.

In addition to delivering primarily preventative, wrap-around community-based services to address age-appropriate needs, this position will respond to youths' unique needs to develop knowledge and skills, learn to manage emotions and relationships, and acquire important attributes and abilities, and will engage with youth in all places and spaces in West Vancouver.

Reporting to the Youth Services, Aquatics, and Community Wellness Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for :

  • Establishing ongoing relationships with youth, including those in imminent risk, to provide support and develop personal, social, and leadership potential;
  • Providing outreach to youth in community;
  • Working independently and utilizing critical thinking skills to work effectively with youth in crisis;
  • Assist in managing youth in our various Youth Services drop in spaces
  • Planning, developing, coordinating, implementing and supervising Youth Services outreach programs, out trips and events;
  • Working in partnership and collaboration with other Youth Services providers;
  • Understanding a wide variety of youth issues; and
  • Performing other related duties as required.
  • The preferred candidate will have : the ability to recognize and deal with behavioural and social adjustment issues; considerable knowledge of small group dynamics and leadership related to youth;
  • considerable knowledge of available recreational, social, educational, cultural and vocational opportunities offered through public and private organizations;
  • working knowledge of standard casework techniques and their application to behavioural, social and family problems; past demonstrated experience working with a variety of partner agencies;

ability to engage youth in activities; proven ability to generate new ideas and organize special events within a budget.

Required qualifications include : University or college degree in social sciences or a youth-related subject, such as Education or Child and Youth Care, plus a minimum of two years’ experience working with youth, preferably in an outreach capacity, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

A current Emergency First Aid (or better) with CPR C’ and AED certification, an unrestricted Class 4 BC Driver’s License and access to use of a personal vehicle is required.

Additional training and courses in mental health, addictions, and personal coaching is an asset.

WVMEA (Union) Permanent, Full-time

Hours of Work :

37.5 hours per week (hours and days of work may vary)

Starting Rate of Pay :

$32.87 per hour (2022 rate)

This position has a pay structure with five steps which increase annually.
