The Role
BGC is seeking an experienced Coastal Engineer to be part of our newly developed coastal group. The successful candidate will work in multi-disciplinary teams related to surface water, geohazards, geophysics, soil mechanics, climate change, cryology, and earth observation / data science.
The role will require technical leadership, business development, mentorship to other BGC team members and advancing innovative practice and use of new technologies.
The successful candidate will act as a technical expert in multiple areas of marine and coastal engineering including, but not limited to : geomorphology and sediment transport, coastal vulnerability and flooding assessments, coastal restoration, nature-based solutions and design and development of coastal infrastructure.
This position will preferably be based in one of our North American BGC offices with occasional travel to other offices and project locations.
Responsibilities
- Lead business development initiatives and assist in the development and execution of BGC's coastal engineering strategy.
- Assist in the continued development of the coastal processes and morphology team.
- Act as a project engineer and technical lead for specific aspects of BGC projects across all service sectors.
- Author or co-author reports and act as a technical reviewer for work done by others.
- Train, mentor, and supervise technical work of other staff.
- Work with client and partner representatives.
- Promote BGC vision, values and culture amongst BGC staff.
- Travel as required, which could occasionally include extended shifts at remote work sites and visits to other BGC offices.
Required Education, Experience, and Competencies
- Bachelor's degree in Geological or Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Post-graduate degree in Coastal Engineering (or similar fields) preferred.
- A minimum of 10 years relevant post-graduate work experience in consulting or industry.
- Professional status required : P.Eng., PE., P.Geo.
- Technical expertise in sophisticated numerical modeling, shoreline design, and field investigations.
- Experience in projects in Canada or the United States is desired, exposure to projects in the arctic or Australia would be an additional asset.
- Desire to collaborate and contribute to projects globally while helping to develop and expand our client-base in the coastal engineering industry, in line with BGC's strategic direction.
- Strong leadership, analytical and project management, and communication skills.

Position Requirements
Drug & Alcohol Testing
To ensure we meet our client's compliance requirements and our workplace health and safety commitments, BGC has a drug and alcohol policy that applies to this position.
The policy states that an employee may be required to take a drug and alcohol test prior to engaging in field work. This testing could be requested within an employee's first week or in the future, as required.
It is important to note that some clients also require random drug and alcohol testing, and / or testing in the event of a health and safety accident or incident.
Driver's License
BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck. Upon hiring, BGC will require a driver's abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.
Travel and Vaccination

The estimated base salary range for this position is $125,000 - $250,000 CAD per annum, however base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
BGC's compensation package also includes a training allowance and a comprehensive medical and dental plan.
