Duties
This position is for a computational fracture mechanics based research scientist position. The incumbent will, in consultation with research scientists and technologists and in direct support of program objectives, develop and apply computational fracture mechanics and materials science techniques, as required to meet program objectives.
The incumbent will participate in projects and supervise technicians, engineers, and scientists using the CanmetMATERIALS facilities, advise on computational procedures, instruct others in applications of computational technologies as required, and lead in the interpretation of results.
Research will contribute to the economic and environmental success of Canadian industry, and to the quality of life of Canadians derived from the value-added use of minerals, metals and materials.
Work environment
This position is located in Hamilton, Ontario. CanmetMATERIALS is a state-of-the-art facility in materials research that provides world-class R&D in partnership with universities and industry.
It supports innovation in advanced materials, manufacturing and clean energy.

Education
E1. The minimum standard is :
Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences or engineering related to the duties of the position, or the employer-approved alternative for the SE classification. (See Note 1).
Abilities / Skills
Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES) (Revised October 1, 1999).
Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and / or recognition by the professional community of the research environment.
It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from :
- Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
- Operational research and scientific analysis;
- Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.
Note :
1.The employer-approved alternative for the SE classification is an acceptable master’s or bachelor’s degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience.
The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position.
The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree calibre.
Experience
EX1. Three or more years experience in performing computational scientific research as related to material behaviour, design, testing, fabrication or processing.
EX2. Experience using finite element software (commercial, open source or custom) for simulations of fracture of materials, for example Abaqus or LS-Dyna
EX3. Experience in collaborative research with universities, governments, science-based non-government organizations or industry.

Knowledge
K1. Knowledge of the fundamental principles of materials science, especially phenomena that determine material microstructure, property and performance relationships;
K2. Knowledge of continuum mechanics as applied to the simulation of material behaviour
K3. Knowledge of computational and numerical techniques, including finite element methods, as applied to modelling the mechanical behaviour of materials;
K4. Knowledge of fracture mechanics parameters and their application in simulation models and model analysis
K5. Knowledge of constitutive laws as related to modelling materials behaviour.
Abilities
- A1. Ability to develop code for material simulation, models or analysis, using a high level language such as Fortran, C, C++ or equivalent, such as in the development of user subroutines;
- A2. Ability to develop models that explain materials performance from scientific observations;
- A3. Ability to communicate complex scientific subject matter verbally;
- A4. Ability to communicate complex scientific subject matter in writing;

Experience - Asset
AEX1. Three or more years experience conducting scientific research on materials used in the transportation, oil and gas, energy production, energy efficiency or clean energy technologies industries;
AEX2. Experience using other (non-finite element) numerical methods for simulations of property-structure-process relationships of materials.
AEX3. Experience in preparing proposals, developing and leading research projects.
Knowledge - Asset
AK1. Knowledge of metal failure or plasticity related theories.
AK2. Knowledge of models applicable to functional material properties.
AK3. Knowledge of experimental methods as they pertain to mechanical behaviour of materials.
