The School of the Environment in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in the area of Sustainable Food Systems Pedagogy.

The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2025 or shortly thereafter.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Environmental Studies by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching.

We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths . Candidates must have teaching experience in a degree-granting program at both undergraduate and graduate level, including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material / lectures.

Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities.

For this position, candidates must have experience developing and teaching introductory and capstone courses on sustainability, sustainable food systems, and environmental research.

Candidates must have experience teaching large lecture classes, small seminar classes, and supervision of individual student projects through independent study and research opportunity programs, including supervision or co-supervision of graduate students at both the Master’s and PhD level.

Candidates must also have experience in community-engaged learning and experiential learning pedagogy. Additionally, candidates must have published research on critical food systems and campus food systems as pedagogy, have a demonstrated record of successful grant writing for projects on pedagogy and community-engaged learning, and must have served in leadership roles in professional associations related to food and sustainability.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The School of the Environment is an interdisciplinary hub within the Faculty of Arts & Science, running undergraduate and graduate programs in environment and sustainability.

The School recently launched a new undergraduate certificate in sustainability, open to students in any program in Arts and Science, and is a leader in experiential and community-engaged learning, campus food systems and pedagogy rooted in the sustainable campus.

The successful candidate will play a leadership role in the School’s sustainability programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
