REPORTS TO : Supervisor, Community Support and Prevention
POSITION SUMMARY :
The STEM and Coding Coordinator establishes, coordinates, and delivers short-term code programs for children that build skills, confidence, and encourage interest in STEM fields and pathways.
Groups will use Scratch and / or programming languages such as Python. The Coordinator secures venues, develops and delivers program content, supervises children during the code programs, and provides consistently well-run, safe, and high-quality programs.
This program operates in different locations during the week outside of school hours.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Establish and Lead STEM and Code Programs for school-age children across multiple sites and in the After School Program.
- Plan and organize a safe environment and supervise children to protect their safety and personal well-being at all times while in the program.
- Create and implement developmentally appropriate code, and STEM pathway instruction and learning opportunities.
- Provide leadership, support, and guidance to program staff.
- Coordinate and implement effective outreach and recruitment strategies.
- Coordinate and implement strategies to effectively engage parents / families of program participants.
- Coordinate and lead information-sharing sessions with families.
- Communicate with families, parents, caregivers, and community partners such as schools, community centres, public libraries, Toronto Public Housing, etc.
- Implement program evaluation and collect program stats.
- Maintain up-to-date and accurate program records including : registration, attendance, evaluations, etc.
- Load / unload and deliver tablets, and / or laptops, and other equipment and books
- Work as part of the school age children’s programming leadership team.
- Attend agency staff meetings and training, team meetings and special events.
- Maintain optimal attendance at work.
- Mentor or supervise students and volunteers
- Work in compliance with all applicable regulations and laws
- Comply with all Macaulay policies, practices and quality standards.
- Work to further Macaulay’s mission, vision, values and strategic directions.
- Perform other tasks as delegated or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS :
- Graduate of a post-secondary child / youth-related field such as Education, Early Childhood Educator, Child and Youth, Social Worker, Psychology or equivalent experience working with school-age children or youth.
- Successful completion of grade 12 mathematics course or equivalent.
- Post-secondary math / computer courses or program an asset.
- Capable and confident in helping children with math skills from grades 2 through 6.
- Direct experience with programming / coding
- Able to learn programming skills independently using a variety of methods including training videos.
- Outstanding problem solving, organizational, conflict resolution and decision-making skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication and listening skills.
- Computer literacy including proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective work partnerships with families, colleagues and service providers of diverse backgrounds, abilities and identities.
- Ability to communicate effectively in more than one language an important asset.
- Excellent time management skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize.
- Strong understanding of teamwork and independent practice with the ability to work effectively to contribute to high performing teams.
- Ability to work all shifts, including late afternoon, evening and weekend hours.
- Acceptable Vulnerable Sector Police Reference Check
- Experience working with school-age children in a recreation or academic setting. Proven track record in using positive, effective strategies to lead activities with groups of children
- Lived experience in the communities we serve.
- Understanding of and experience applying a trauma-informed approach is an asset.
- Current Standard first aid / CPR Level C certificate is an asset.
- High Five Training is an asset.
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License and access to a vehicle required
SALARY : STEM and Coding Coordinator Salary Scale (starting at $ $56,151-57,718 per annum) with Competitive Benefits Package (health & dental), Defined Pension plan, and paid time off entitlements (starting at 20 vacation days & 3 float days)
