The opportunity
TC Energy’s Canada Gas Industrial Control & Electrical Engineering department is seeking a Senior Automation & Control Engineer to contribute their expertise to the team.
This position requires automation and control engineering knowledge coupled with proven technical leadership to improve the reliability of TC Energy’s growing fleet of Compressor Station assets by controlling and implementing operational changes to achieve our operational excellence and process safety goals.
This role is technical in nature but demands excellent communication skills enabling collaboration and problem solving levering the experience of diverse internal and external stakeholders.
What you’ll do
- Directly support a team of automation professionals with coaching and mentorship, lead team improvements demonstrating informal leadership in technical and non-technical contexts
- Lead structured Risk Assessments of automation issues and contribute automation discipline expertise to multi-discipline Risk Assessments following Canada Gas & TC Operational Risk Management processes.
- Support Field Operations and Specialist teams as they diagnose and resolve operational issues while managing constraints imposed by safety, regulations, equipment availability, practicality, and cost
- Develop, prioritize, and implement automation and control hardware and software changes to resolve facility reliability issues and operational concerns guided by Company management of change (MOC) and practice of engineering (POE) procedures
- Apply proactive asset management techniques to define the multi-year work program for the fleet of automation and control equipment in Canada Gas
- Develop detailed project scopes for facility improvement work based on established site equipment condition, company asset lifecycle strategies, engineering standards, and best practices
- Contribute lessons learned to improve Company engineering standards, specifications, and operating procedures optimizing lifecycle cost, risk, and performance
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or Software Engineering
- Must be registered or eligible for registration with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng)
- 6 or more years of applicable experience
- Aptitude for supportive coaching and mentorship enabling team technical and non-technical growth
- Proven track record driving inter-disciplinary collaboration to deliver strategic change
- Superior communication skills ensuring peers and leaders understand strategic and tactical goals, progress, value and outcomes
- Experience developing automation & control system engineering deliverables, specifically control narrative documents, cause-effect diagrams, control panel designs, software and equipment testing
- Experience developing, testing and optimizing HMI systems ensuring operability and ease of use
- Experience with on-site and remote problem resolution and on-site commissioning
- Knowledge of applicable codes (CEC), industry standards (ISA, IEEE), and best practices
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with data-driven asset management strategies, systems, and tools
- Experience with the design, construction and operation of natural gas compression facilities or similar industrial facilities
- Industrial equipment lifecycle assessment, upgrade program definition
- Experience with electrical engineering including protection and control, arc flash studies, hazardous area classification, switchgear & MCCs, UPS systems
- Understanding of the engineering design process including design review cycles, transmittal, sign-off, and authentication requirements
- Experience implementing facility control systems including RTU / PLC and HMI (Emerson ControlWave Micro, Rockwell RS Logix, Emerson RX3i, Wonderware System Platform & Pi System)
- Have and maintain a valid driver's license and provide a driver's abstract (record) for review
