The position is located at the Coquitlam / New Westminster campus. Hours of work : up to a maximum of 20 hours / week. The work terms for this position are :

1. Fall 2024 : September 3, 2024 - December 19, 2024

2. Winter 2025 : January 6, 2025 - April 25, 2025

3. Summer 2025 : May 6, 2025 - August 18, 2025

The Role

Reporting to the Student Support Navigator, the Student Assistant, Peer Support Navigator's role is to be a friendly face on campus to provide support to students with lived experience in care accessing Douglas College and BC's Provincial Tuition Waiver Program along with students from alternative schools.

The Student Assistant, Peer Support Navigator aims to create a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for this student population.

Additionally, the Student Assistant, Peer Support Navigator will be responsible for assisting with the planning and hosting of regular gatherings to build community and enhance the students overall experience of post-secondary.

Responsibilities

  • be responsible for connecting with students in a variety of capacities to provide support
  • act as a peer mentor and provide guidance and support with college processes and experience with the tuition waiver
  • assist in the monthly events to support social connection, build life skills, connect to resources, and integrate into campus community
  • assist in connecting students with resources on and off campus and will work with resources to enhance accessibility
  • assist in promoting visibility of the Tuition Waiver Program, and supports for youth in / from care
  • assist prospective and current students with the application process for the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program
  • collaborate with other departments / teams as needed

To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need

  • Demonstrate GPA academic standing of at least 2.3.
  • Understand and knowledge of social justice concepts and colonialism
  • Has experienced at least one year of college level study at Douglas College, and is a current student
  • Knowledge of the various resources and services available to students at Douglas College
  • Knowledge of the unique needs and experiences of students with lived experience in government care
  • Knowledge of the various resources, funding, and services available to students with lived experience in care
  • Knowledge of alternative school-based education
  • Understand and ability to practice of trauma informed practice
  • Able to work with a diverse student population
  • Basic computer skills
  • Good communication skills (written and oral)
  • Self-motivated, demonstrating initiative, creativity, attention to detail
  • Familiar with bursaries and grants available for this student population
  • Preference will be given to students with lived experience in government care and who are accessing the Provincial Tuition Waiver Program at Douglas College and / or with an alternative based education

Domestic students must meet ONE of the following criteria, to be eligible to work as a Student Assistant / Student Research Assistant :

1. The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College throughout the work term; OR

2. The domestic student must have been enrolled in, and maintained, a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College in the term immediately preceding the work term and has indicated an intention to enroll at the college in the term immediately following the work term; OR

3. The domestic student must be enrolled in, and maintain a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.

C. throughout the work term; OR

4. The domestic student must have been enrolled in, and maintained, a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.

C. in the term immediately preceding the work term and has indicated an intention to enroll at the institution in the term immediately following the work term

International students must meet ONE of the following criteria, to be eligible to work as a Student Assistant / Student Research Assistant :

1. The international student is enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College, throughout the academic year; OR

2. The international student, who is not a Douglas College student, but is an international student at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.

C., has a valid Study Permit that has the notation - "May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186 (F), (V) or (W).

Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria." Proof of enrollment in full-time studies from the other post-secondary institution is required.

An original copy of a Social Insurance Number ( SIN ) and an original Study Permit are required by law before commencing work at Douglas College.

Qualified Douglas College students meeting the above criteria will be given first preference over students of other qualifying institutions.
