On-Call SSAs must be available to work a minimum of 3 full days per week. Applicants must be available to work throughout the district and may also be required to travel to two locations on the same day (eg.
one school in the morning and another in the afternoon). Once hired, you can choose to remain on the on-call list or you can apply to the VSB’s internal postings which include full-time temporary contracts and continuing / permanent positions.
All permanent positions include a comprehensive benefits package (including extended health, dental and municipal pension plan) after passing a probation period of 16 weeks.
Duties may include, but are not limited to :
Collecting data and tracking student progress
Supporting students when they display unexpected behavior
Fostering positive interactions between the student and their peers
Implement individualized programs and activities while focusing on building independence
Providing personal care : Dressing, toileting (including diaper changes), feeding, lifting, transfers to and from a wheelchair etc
Escorting student on community outings and travelling throughout the city. This may include accompanying and supporting students on work experience at various sites.
Qualifications :
Completion of Grade 12
Completion of a Special Education Assistant program or related field and over two (2) months of experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience
Ability to independently lift and position students up to 35 pounds
Ability to run after a student to avert them from danger
Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English
The following areas are an asset :
Experience providing Intensive Behavioural Intervention on a Home Team
A clear understanding of the theory and principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis
Completion of POPARD coursework
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (CPI or MANDT)
Ability to speak a second language

3 Supervisors from your practicum(s) and
2 supervisors / managers from your last places of employment
Experienced EAs (3 in total) : Current Principal, Vice Principal and previous Administrator and / or your most recent employer

If applicants meet the following criteria they may be considered for a School & Student Support B (SSB) position, paid for 7 hours per day at a higher pay rate :
Completion of 2 years Post Secondary in the following areas :
Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Child and Youth Care, Immigration / Migration studies, Ethnic / Cultural / Indigenous studies, Human Development and Family studies, Applied Behaviour Science or Education.
2 years experience in the following areas :
Directly working with children / youth who demonstrate a higher need for support in the areas of social-emotional learning, behaviour, learning disabilities, mental health, or complex trauma.
Assessing and supporting the social, emotional, behavioural, mental health and / or learning needs of students.
Implementing various behavior support and / or self-regulation programs and modifying intervention strategies for students with diverse needs.
Working with students exhibiting challenging behaviours, FAS, conduct disorders and implementing various learning and behavior management strategies.
Planning and effectively carrying out activities to promote student development.
Itinerant Assignment :
A School & Student Support worker is hired to work throughout the Vancouver School District and not for a particular school or a restricted set of duties.
Although in posted vacancies specific reference may be made to a school and to the duties associated with that assignment, Employee Services may transfer staff within the system in certain circumstances as deemed appropriate.
