Job Description

  • Develop and implement a vision for Continuous Improvement and Innovation.
  • Manage the business, project, and strategic planning of Kinross’ companywide Continuous Improvement program and initiatives.
  • Facilitate the sharing of best practices throughout the company.
  • Work closely with the mine sites to drive increased adoption of a continuous improvement mindset and culture to increase shareholder value through cost reduction, operational full potential, and waste elimination initiatives.
  • Provide direct on-site support towards the identification, execution, and sustainment of critical site improvement activities.
  • Manage multiple direct or indirect reports, often providing leadership to multiple project teams that include many indirect reports to identify and resolve complex technical and operational problems.
  • Deliver training and be responsible for the development of a community of practitioners.
  • This role reports to the Vice President, Global Maintenance and Continuous Improvement.

Job Responsibilities

1. Lead CI group with minimal supervision for the performance, results, and tactical implementation of Kinross’ Global Continuous Improvement and Innovation program.

  • Develop direct and indirect reports in line with the Kinross Way for Leadership.
  • Develop and execute the strategy of the global CI program.
  • Implement consistent standards for CI organizations, training, measurement, etc.
  • Review and monitor program progress, facilitate program improvements, and lead site-level cross-functional initiatives that generate significant value.
  • Develop a global community of practitioners.
  • Provide direct on-site support towards the identification, execution, and sustainment of critical site improvement activities.
  • Drive Kinross’ High Performance Culture through the development and execution of the Innovation strategy.
  • Assist in the collection and prioritization of initiatives in the digital and non-digital innovation space.
  • Work across functions with top Operations management to develop projects until their pilot and implementation stages.
  • 2. Lead & Administer CI Program

  • Develop and implement a 3-5 year strategic plan for Continuous Improvement.
  • Collaborate, advise, and challenge sites to establish robust CI plans linked to the Company and Site 4PPs.
  • Audit the CI plans and year-end results annually.
  • Track maturity and progress of all continuous improvement programs at Kinross sites.
  • Maintain the CI / AE expert-network with regular calls, one-on-ones, and conferences.
  • Work collaboratively to set and draft Global Standards for CI.
  • Oversee the development of common training materials for CI concepts and onboarding.
  • Share best practices among our sites and challenge them to improve.
  • Provide direct on-site support towards the identification, execution, and sustainment of critical site improvement activities.
  • 3. Act as the project lead on site-level and sometimes global cross-functional initiatives.

  • Identify, coordinate, and apply broad industry and commercial resources to drive financial and operational performance across operations.
  • 4. Develop and Manage the execution of Kinross’ Innovation mandate.

  • Enhance the way Kinross exploits innovative ideas that help transform the business.
  • Coordinate the development of relationships with academia and engineering firms to stay aware of cutting-edge ideas.
  • Build capabilities to deliver on innovation-driven initiatives.
  • Ensure a systematic way for successful ideas and implemented projects to be transferred to all sites.
  • 5. Develop skills, tools, and training to support innovative ideas.

  • Create and monitor targets to guide performance and evaluate progress.
  • Work with other functions to build out their innovation projects.
  • Run pilots at one or more sites to drive adoption and success.
  • Build a repository of ideas and a blueprint for the ideal site for future projects.
  • 6. Support and / or advise on CI / Innovation issues to Operations leadership.

  • Help site General Managers work through tough problems relating to behavioral change management.
  • Add value to CI programs by sharing experience from within Kinross and outside the organization.
  • 7. Serve as an internal resource to General Managers and CI Managers.

  • Assist in creating CI programs at sites lacking one.
  • Provide on-site CI training in various areas and train trainers.
  • 8. Serve as an intermediary between CI / Innovation and other teams.

  • Liaise with other departments and CI teams to drive specific improvement initiatives.
  • Act as the voice for CI / Innovation at Kinross.
  • 9. Support other Operations Strategy projects as needed.

  • Manage time to meet regular CI and Innovation obligations while working on other projects.
  • Evaluate Strategic Business Plans for CI opportunities.
  • Qualifications & Skill Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree in Engineering, Mathematics, etc.
  • 10+ years experience in Business or Continuous Improvement activities in the mining sector.
  • Experience in business analysis or finance preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to manage data and execute quality control.
  • Ability to break down problems to identify root causes.
  • Strong leadership and project management skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to connect with all levels of employees and management.
  • Proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
