VISUAL LANGUAGE INTERPRETER An exciting opportunity exists within the Learning Services Department for a Visual Language Interpreter.

As the third largest school district in B.C. and located in the Tri-Cities of Metro Vancouver, the school district has a population of 32,000 students with approximately 4400 teaching, administrative, managerial and support staff.

This position will be based out of a school in our district and will report to the Principal / designate and provide sign and / or aural language interpreting services and reinforces the educational program under the direction of the classroom / program teacher.

Duties : Facilitates communication for deaf / hard of hearing students and teachers by providing visual interpretation services according to the signing, educational and communication needs required in situations such as classroom instruction, student dialogue, counseling sessions, tutorials, assemblies, parent / student meetings, field trips and extra-curricular actives.

Prepares as necessary for interpreting : educational material, vocabulary and concepts under teacher direction. Follows up to ensure student(s) comprehension of instruction.

Assists in the planning, development, creation, and modification of curriculum and classroom material to suit the student and / or groups’ needs.

Ensures safety in classrooms, school facilities, playground, school functions and in community / school related programs.

Assists students in the utilization of a wide range of special equipment including instructional aid communications equipment, standard school cafeteria kitchen equipment, office equipment, gym and playground equipment.

Assist the teacher with daily preparation of lesson materials, classroom and field trip supervision, record keeping, reports and displays, Facilitate and encourage positive interactions between students and school staff and assist in liaison with parents, social workers and others.

Required knowledge and Skills : A certificate in a sign language interpretation program from a recognized college / institution.

A driver’s license may be required. This is a unionized position which offers $37.93 (30 hours / week while school is in session).
