Description
The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined in menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :
General
- Following a pre-determined meal and recipe plan, leads and participates in the preparation, cooking, and service of meals for the Supper with Sally Ann meal program.
- Ensure that all food and products are consistently prepared and served according to recipes, portion control, cooking and serving standards.
- Prepare and serve attractive, nutritious meals, according to the prepared menu plans and in accordance with applicable food service and Canada’s Food Guide.
- Adapt work practices within specific parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services.
- Make use of and decide on best use of resources, including donations to minimize waste.
Menu Planning
- Prepare an ongoing list of food supplies needed and inform Director.
- Properly store and label all leftover food and supplies; rotate supplies to ensure older stock is used first.
Supervision
- Provides direction and supervision to volunteers working in the Pantry and Kitchen’ areas.
- Oversee and support scheduled volunteers, demonstrate work methods, and ensure they work together to achieve the purpose of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army.
- Demonstrate work methods to volunteers.
Health and Safety :
- Ensure that daily temperatures are recorded for the sterile refrigerator and freezer, they are up to date for inspection.
- Maintain cleanliness of all equipment, drawers, and cupboards and clean food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, and utensils etc.
- Responsible for all cleaning and sanitizing procedures in accordance with Public Health etc.
- Follow guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitor practices to ensure adherence.
- Monitor and maintain kitchen equipment, report any equipment issues to supervisor.
- Maintain sanitation, hygiene, health and safety standards and safe handling of foods while performing duties.
- Report to the supervisor new equipment that is required or broken equipment, which needs to be repaired or replaced.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform other position related duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS :
- This is a temporary part-time position based on up to 24 hours per week.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required and schedule may vary from week to week.
- Ability to lift / move more than 20 lbs. (4.5kg).
- This job requires reaching, bending, stooping and working in a standing position.
- Required to wear appropriate Salvation Army identification.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS :
- Completed Secondary School.
- Safe Food Handling Certification.
- Cook’s papers, one (1) year course would be an asset.
- Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE :
- Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience
- Experience in meal planning within a budget.
- Experience with nutritional needs of seniors and the homeless population.
- Good knowledge of nutrition and safe food handling.

- Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral / written communication skills.
- Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner.
- May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.
e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.
