Health, Safety, and Wellness Specialist
The Health, Safety and Wellness Specialist will be responsible for taking a proactive, prevention-oriented, and continuous improvement approach to develop, implement, and monitor health, safety, and wellness programs at Mohawk College.
This includes being an internal technical resource to provide guidance, education and training on a variety of health, safety and wellness issues and conducting internal HS&W audits and employee surveys.
The incumbent will provide a key focus on fostering a psychologically safe environment for employees to optimize their mental health through education, training and strategies.
The incumbent will also manage the ergonomic safety program and the overall wellness strategy and provide support for health and safety compliance.
Responsibilities :
The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following :
Wellness Program Administration
- Provide support to employees and leaders to manage issues of stress, strain, burnout and psychological health and safety incidents in the workplace and associated projects
- Develop policies, procedures, guidelines, and programs related to psychological health and safety performance enhancement in the workplace
- Lead the implementation and maintenance of elements of the Psychological Safety in the Workplace (CSA Z1003-13) Standard
- Develop and manage mental health and psychological safety metrics and data collection strategy to monitor and develop strategies for performance improvement
- Manage the employee ergonomic program including maintaining a standard assessment process, training, education and developing and updating ergonomic toolkits and complete ergonomic assessments as needed
- Collaborate with team members to implement key deliverables to drive employee wellbeing
- Plan and organize health promotion activities to engage employees in healthy behaviours
- Create communication, tools and resources material for Wellness awareness raising and workplace wellness initiatives
- Promote awareness of EAP services and encourage utilization
- Develop and implement metrics that monitor the performance of programs relative to their goals and the College strategic initiatives
- Manage the Wellness Committee including terms of reference and action plan with key deliverables in alignment with the wellness strategy
Health and Safety Compliance
- Support the development of health and safety programs, operating procedures based on assessment of current needs, health and safety legislation, industry standards and best practices
- In collaboration with the HS&W Team, develop best practice guidelines and providing advice and consulting support to Leaders and employees on HS&W related matters
Reporting and Metrics
Create quarterly and annual reports outlining leading and lagging indicators including EAP utilization metrics to be included on overall HS&W executive summaries
Communication and Awareness
Create and maintain a strategy for wellness communication and awareness activities
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications :
The successful applicant will have :
- A minimum of 4 Year Degree in Allied Health with a specialization in mental health
- Five years of progressive experience in Health and Safety, Wellness and Psychological Safety
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with diverse teams and internal clients to identify needs and designing and delivering solutions
- Experience in developing and updating training / education materials in various areas of wellness including psychological safety
- Knowledge of the Psychological Safety in the Workplace Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Standard Z1003-13
- Certification in Psychological Safety / Workplace Mental Health would be considered an asset
- Certified trainer in Mental Health First Aid would be considered an asset
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related Canadian Standard Association (CSA) Standards
- A designation in OHS such as Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) would be considered an asset.
- Experience in developing and implementing an Ergonomic Safety Program including training, tools and standard operating procedures and completing ergonomic assessments and physical demands analysis
- Experience working in a unionized environment with Joint H&S Committees and Wellness Committees
- Time management and organizational skills
- Communication, negotiation, facilitation and conflict resolution skills
- Strong analytical skills
- Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity and inclusion with the ability to communicate and work effectively inter-culturally with diverse groups of students, employees and the community
