Playing an important part in the design team, the Senior Mechanical Designer is a team player with the ability to receive and execute instructions from the Senior Engineer or Project Manager with limited supervision.
The Senior Mechanical Designer will have a good understanding of mechanical systems design which include HVAC, plumbing & fire protection systems, will prepare drawings of existing building systems, prepare drawings for renovations and new construction projects of varying complexity based on verbal instructions, sketches and / or formal documents.
The position also requires preparing plans, section details and other drawings for construction, performing inspections of existing facilities to determine and verify existing system details, and utilizing design equipment and technology.
The Senior Mechanical Designer will also provide guidance and delegate to intermediate & junior staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work with and support other senior, intermediate and junior members of the production team
- Work directly with and support Senior Engineers along with overseeing and directing intermediate / junior members of the production team
- Prepare contract drawings, schedules, details and sketches from conceptual design, through to tender and construction
- Ensure Design Standards, Quality Assurance, and Quality Control procedures are followed during drawing planning and production
- Ability to work with clients and consultant groups to manage a project, with supervision
- Work to and meet project timelines, deliverables and deadlines
- Modelling in BIM REVIT MEP and using Navisworks for coordination
- Ability to generate mark-ups for intermediate and junior production staff on HVAC, Hydronics, Plumbing, and Fire protection systems
- Ability to perform Load calculation using HAP
- Ability to perform system selection, with direction from Senior Engineer such as diffusers, variable air volumes boxes, terminal heating equipment, air valves, heat pumps, fans. etc.
- Ability to layout and coordinate complete systems and mechanical rooms from schematic drawings with minimum supervision from Lead Engineer
- Ability to apply prescriptive requirements of mechanical building services engineering codes with minimal supervision provided by senior engineer or project manager
- Co-ordinate project requirements with all team members
- Support Construction Administration personnel including field reviews and co-ordination, review and issuance of changes, Clarifications and RFI
- Co-ordinate project information and work with all internal and / or external disciplines, including but not limited to, architectural, electrical, structural and civil as required
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / ABILITIES
- 9 - 12 years of experience in the preparation, drafting, and design of engineering drawings using appropriate standards for HVAC, plumbing, fire protection and medical gases
- Comprehensive working knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, ASHRAE, NFPA, and industry standards
- Strong experience in planning and managing projects, preparation of materials, cost / timing estimates, reporting and producing high level schematics
- Experience in HVAC, Hydronics, Plumbing, Fire Protection and Specialty gases with Laboratories, healthcare, and other project typologies at a variety of scales
- Proficient with Revit MEP, Navisworks and MS Office

- Possession of a solid understanding of construction protocols and processes and a proven ability to interpret contract documents (drawings and specifications)

- Ability to perform complete and detailed site take-off and direct junior / intermediate staff
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal
- Highly organized and able to prioritize multiple tasks and demonstrate a flexible approach to work assignments
- Willingness to continue education in industry related programs
- Ability to handle stressful situations in an amicable manner
- Attention to detail and accuracy is required
- Experience in complex environments such as Laboratories and Health care facilities is required
- Understanding of sustainable design as it relates to mechanical systems is required

- Quality of work meets / exceeds requirements and specifications of the Lead Mechanical Engineer, project architects / engineers and clients
- Projects are completed on budget and on time
- Demonstrated ability to work with various levels of people with McCallumSather and within client organizations.
Minimum Requirements Education / Licensing / Certification
- Technologist - College Diploma Mechanical / Building Science / Building Systems
- Project Portfolio to demonstrate CAD and Revit experience and capabilities
- Drivers License Additional Preferred Skills and Assets
- Experience working on LEED and Net Zero projects
- Energy Modelling
