The role of a millwright, also known as an industrial mechanic can involve a wide range of tasks including :
- Inspecting and testing machinery and equipment to diagnose and troubleshoot problems.
- Dismantling, repairing, and replacing defective parts using hand tools and power tools.
- Reassembling equipment and testing it to ensure it functions properly.
- Aligning and adjusting machinery and equipment components to ensure they operate efficiently.
- Performing preventive maintenance on machinery and equipment to prevent breakdowns and ensure optimal performance.
- Installing new machinery and equipment, including setting it up and testing it to ensure it meets specifications.
- Reading and interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics to understand the operation of machinery and equipment.
- Communicating with engineers and other technical professionals to identify and solve problems.
Industrial mechanics work in a variety of settings, including manufacturing plants, refineries, power plants, and other industrial facilities.
They must have a strong understanding of mechanics, hydraulics, and pneumatics, as well as knowledge of electrical systems and controls.
They must also have excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Position Description
A Millwright Apprentice assists and learns from experienced Millwrights in repairing and maintaining mechanical equipment and machinery in industrial and construction settings.
The Apprentice supports the repair, installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of machinery and equipment. The successful candidate(s) will be stationed in the field and at a Blackstone customer site within Canada, reporting directly to the site supervisor / foreman / journeyperson.
The individual will be expected to join the Blackstone team and align with Blackstone's culture of excellence, safety and quality
Responsibilities
- Assist senior Millwrights in performing repairs, installations, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and machinery in industrial and construction settings
- Learn and apply safe work practices in accordance with industry standards and regulations
- Learn and apply knowledge of mechanical systems and machinery, including hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical systems
- Help in the assembly and disassembly of machinery and equipment
- Learn how to use a variety of hand and power tools to carry out repairs and maintenance
- Assist in the cleaning, lubrication, and adjustment of machinery and equipment
- Learn how to interpret and follow blueprints, schematics, and manuals
- Keep work area clean, organized and safe
- Ability to learn and take direction while working within a team structure, and on occasion, independently as directed
- Know when to ask a question if you are not fully aware or confident
- Adhering to and promoting a safe work environment for yourself and your co-workers while maintaining an organized and safe work area
- Completing all company required documentation in a timely manner as directed by your supervisor / foreman / journeyperson
- Being flexible to the urgent nature of our business, you may be asked periodically to ensure work is completed in a timely manner
- Supporting the business as it requires or in a manner in which you are inspired to positively contribute to the work environment for yourself and your co-workers
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Current Millwright Apprentices will be considered, in addition to any non-indentured individuals
- Completion of a Millwright pre-apprentice program is preferred
- Ability to learn new skills and apply knowledge
- Strong communication skills
- Attention to detail and a commitment to quality work
- Possess a strong work ethic and be mechanically inclined is beneficial
- Able to follow both written and verbal instructions
- Experience working with hand tools and equipment is beneficial
- Comply with all company policies, company safety, quality and performance
Requirements
- Punctual, hard working, well organized, honest, dedicated and enthusiastic
- Successful completion of our pre-employment drug and alcohol test
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as well as overtime as required
- H2S, Fall Arrest, Confined Space, and CSO safety tickets are preferred
- Physical stamina and the ability to lift heavy objects
- A valid driver's license and reliable transportation

- O / H Crane, Rigging Safety, Fork Lift, Zoom Boom, First Aid, and SCBA courses are not mandatory but are assets
