The Alma Mater Society (AMS) is the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) student society, and works to improve the academic, social and personal lives of the 56,000 UBC students at its Vancouver campus.
The AMS also runs nine food and beverage outlets, a catering and conference operation, and the AMS Student Nest, providing on-campus employment opportunities and generating revenue that goes directly back into supporting the students at UBC.
Position title : Interim Vice President, Academic & University Affairs
Reports to : AMS Council
Employee status : Temporary, Full-time, Salaried
Length of term : November 2024 January 2025 (by-election to be held)
Hours per week : 37.5
Salary : $44,547.60 per annum (prorated)
Position Purpose
The Interim Vice President, Academic & University Affairs is responsible for leading the Academic & University Affairs portfolio and representing the student body.
This position will be managed by the AMS President, who manages the day-to-day activities of the Executive as a whole to ensure the fulfillment of their duties and responsibilities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lobby the University on issues of interest to students;
- Assist Constituencies with academic and other issues between them and their Faculty or School;
- Liaise with organizations at the University representing the faculty, the sessional lecturers, the teaching assistants, and the non-teaching staff concerning University affairs;
- Be the Society’s liaison with the University’s Board of Governors and the UBC Vancouver Senate;
- Manage the VP AUA staff
- Works with the AMS mission statement and values
- Other duties as outlined in AMS Code and Bylaws, and as assigned by Council or the Executive Committee from time to time
Qualifications and Experience
- Must be a currently registered student at UBC Vancouver or one of its affiliated colleges
- Knowledge of AMS club and constituencies
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and detail orientated
- Comfort in working in a technical environment
- Professional conduct
- Ability to work independently, under pressure and meeting deadlines
- Knowledge of AMS fiscal procedures and policies is an asset
- Advanced knowledge of computer and technological skills
