Job Description

The McMaster Industry Liaison Office (MILO) supports the research endeavors of McMaster University by facilitating collaborative research with industry partners and disseminating research results through commercialization.

MILO is a unit of the Office of the Vice President Research at McMaster University and is looking for a qualified professional to join the Business Development team.

General Description

Responsible for enhancing the development of collaborative relationships between the University, public, and private sector.

Assists in the assessment of patentability and market potential of University research, in support of the University's research and technology transfer activities.

Requires a thorough knowledge of business fundamentals and a scientific field.

Representative Duties & Responsibilities

  • Facilitate activities associated with establishing and maintaining the University's intellectual property protection including liaising with patent attorneys and other agents.
  • Collaborate with others to identify industrial partners and facilitate additional research funding through private partnerships.
  • Draft provisional patent applications.
  • Drafts intellectual property related agreements for internal use and non-disclosure agreements between the University and external organizations.
  • Educate and inform faculty, staff, researchers, and students on legal and patent issues related to protecting their Intellectual Property, University's Intellectual Property policy and technology and knowledge transfer in general.
  • Negotiate and prepare intellectual property agreements at the guidance of leadership including option agreements, technology licenses, and interinstitutional commercialization agreements between the University and external organizations.
  • Conduct market research and prepare reports on the commercial potential and application of newtechnology.
  • Estimate the potential market size in dollars for a new technology by gathering, compiling, and analyzing market data.
  • Travel to various institutions and to potential industrial partners to promote the University's research and technology transfer activities.
  • Meet with faculty, staff, researchers, and students to discuss their research and inventions with commercial potential and legal protection issues related to created intellectual property.
  • Evaluate new disclosures by searching scientific literature and world patent databases for commercialpotential.
  • Develop materials to support funding opportunities, including but not limited to, commercialization sections in grant applications.
  • Create due diligence reports by comparing the features of new technology with the claims of patents that might be related.
  • Gather and compile information required to create marketing materials and develop business plans.
  • Conduct market research and prepare reports on the commercial potential and application of newtechnology.
  • Create and deliver presentations on a variety of topics, including but not limited to, intellectual property and emerging technologies.
  • Provide recommendations on patent and commercialization strategies.
  • Coordinate and facilitate meetings between various parties interested in a specific technology.
  • Participate in and coordinate promotional events.
  • Update and maintain database information.
  • Attend and participate in department meetings.
  • Respond to inquiries from internal and external colleagues and collaborators.

Supervision

  • No formal supervision of others is required.
  • Provide orientation and show procedures to others.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant scientific field.
  • Master's degree in Business Administration or related field.
  • Requires 2 years of relevant experience.

Assets Specific to the Job Opportunity

The incumbent will primarily engage with intellectual property and research outcomes pertinent to mobile applications , software , artificial intelligence (AI) technologies , and the integration of digital tools within hospital and healthcare environments.

A foundational education and substantial experience in these domains are prerequisites for this role.

Proficiency in development and project management methodologies associated with digital tools, software technologies, and mobile applications is essential.

This includes expertise in testing , security and privacy , data governance , and the creation of operational documentation .

The role demands the capacity to collaborate and communicate effectively with a diverse array of project stakeholders, encompassing IT professionals , legal and ethics departments , research personnel , and software development teams .

A thorough understanding of the administrative processes involved in deploying and managing mobile applications through the McMaster Apple or Google Play Developer accounts is required.

A background in Computer Science or Software Engineering , with an emphasis on Life Science technology solutions , is preferred.
