The Opportunity

Reporting directly to the Head Chef with a dotted line to the Culinary Director and General Manager, the Sous Chef will be accountable for the daily operations of the kitchen, ensuring the highest quality and consistency in food and overall presentation is achieved through the effective delegation and management of the kitchen staff.

This position is only available to individuals who are Permanent Residents or Citizens of Canada or in possession of an open work permit and presently living within commutable distance of the Calgary area , as relocation assistance and sponsorship are not being offered at this time.

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in a Sous Chef position or comparable, preferably within a high-end restaurant environment
  • Food Safe Certification is required
  • Post-secondary education in the Culinary Arts strongly preferred, but a combination of experience and education will be considered
  • Red Seal Certification would be seen as beneficial but not a requirement
  • Strong knowledge of culinary techniques, food safety standards and kitchen management

  • Proven ability to multi-task and make smart, fast decisions
  • Demonstrated strength in teamwork, leadership, and communication
  • Collaborative approach to working and communicating with cross-functional teams (Kitchen Staff, FOH and Executive Leadership)
  • Complete fluency in the English language, both written and verbal
  • Other Important Requirements

  • Flexible schedule with relatively open availability to work a variety of shifts, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
  • Responsibilities of the Position

  • Set expectations and drive efficiency in BOH through the effective s upervision of all kitchen staff, delegating tasks and setting priorities to improve service delivery
  • Jump into the line where needed to support the Kitchen Team in the effective preparation, cooking, and presentation of food, maintaining the highest quality at all levels
  • Work efficiently under pressure to ensure food is prepared and served on time with consistency in presentation and quality
  • Maintain and enforce food safety and sanitation standards within the kitchen
  • Step in to run the line directly in the absence of the Head Chef and / or Culinary Director
  • Collaborate with the Head Chef and Culinary Director in the implementation of kitchen policies, procedures, and best practices
  • Resolve kitchen-related issues, including customer complaints and supply shortages
  • Ensure all kitchen items ordered from suppliers are correct and checked for quality
  • Provide on-the-fly and formal coaching, mentorship and leadership to all Cooks within the kitchen, when needed
  • Conduct pre-shift meetings with front of house and back of the house – communicating upcoming functions for whole day, products that are out / short, daily features, etc.
  • Maintain composure and professionalism at all times, ensuring kitchen personnel are supported and prepared for peak hours.
