Candidate Profile
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the evaluation, assessment and improvement design for existing residential, commercial and industrial buildings directly for building owners and operators.
The successful candidate will be a member of the Building Science and Restoration Team and must be comfortable dealing with clients, communicating with contractors and working on active construction sites.
A commitment to providing first-rate client service and technical excellence to deliver practical, creative solutions is essential.
An inquisitive outlook, a hard worker who readily and quickly assumes responsibility and a team player who has the ability to work independently with minimum direction are traits that are required to be successful in this role.
Key Responsibilities
Duties include, but are not limited to :
- Manage projects and clients from conceptual design to final completion
- Site investigation and evaluation of existing buildings
- Formulate retrofit programs and recommend the project concept to the client
- Design and analysis of existing building components, upgrades and improvements
- Preparation of reports and studies
- Preparation of mechanical drawings and specifications
- Participate in the preparation of mechanical engineering calculations, LEED calculations and documentation, energy analysis and , economic analysis including payback calculations
- Work efficiently on multiple projects with competing deadlines
- Design building systems in accordance with office standards, the requirements of municipal or provincial buildings codes and other applicable standards
- Conduct building assessments / audits, participate in capital planning, major equipment replacement projects and control upgrades
- Participate in commissioning test plans, procedures and reports
- Lead mechanical driven projects as the primary point of contact with the Owner, including the management of sub-consultants and administering of the project contract
- Distribution of work between the internal and external design team and attend project / technical meetings as required
- Coordination with other engineering and architectural disciplines
- Design mechanical building systems directly in Revit / CAD; adhering to company BIM / CAD standards
- Contract administration / construction review while implementing retrofit work
- Mentor and train junior staff
- Market and solicit work from new and existing clients
Professional Qualifications & Experience
EDUCATION
- Mechanical Engineering Degree from an accredited university
- Registered with the Professional Engineers of Ontario
EXPERIENCE
- 5-8 years' of mechanical engineering experience
- Supervision of 2 or 3 junior engineers / engineering interns / technologists
SKILLS
- Committed to client service and technical excellence
- Ability to conceptualize design with an understanding of constructability
- Team player with ability to work independently with minimum direction
- Knowledge and experience designing the replacement of major mechanical equipment and systems including air handlers, chillers, boilers, sprinklers and controls in various building types
- Knowledge and experience conducting mechanical building assessments
- Strong attention to detail and produce error free, high quality work
- Demonstrated effective communication skills
- Able to interact professionally with all levels of business personnel and build strong working relationships
- Proven leadership skills
- Exceptional organizational, time-management, and project management skills
- Self-motivated, faster learner with the desire to continually learn and grow
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with all stakeholders
