Role Description

The ideal candidate will be involved in all aspects of development-side municipal and planning law, including : site-specific and broad development policy issues, land-use planning and related development matters including disputes, aiding with municipal review and opinions for real-estate acquisitions, preparing and prosecuting development approvals, and handling expropriation matters, including appearances before municipal councils, Committees of Adjustments, courts and administrative tribunals (e.

g. the Ontario Land Tribunal and the Board of Negotiation). The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of related legal experience, preferably gained at a firm doing municipal and planning law or a municipality

  • Very strong technical skills using : Microsoft Office, Document Management software, Soluno (or similar time keeping application), docketing, billing time
  • Ability to work closely, and in collaboration with clients, other lawyers, municipalities, financial institutions, clerks, and staff
  • Able to work and reason independently on client files
  • Ability to handle all aspects of transaction files with minimal guidance, but with the full support of the firm and staff
  • Possess excellent organizational skills and be able to work in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines

Member in Good Standing of the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) (Required)

Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) (Required)

Your Requirements :

  • 3+ Years’ Post-Call Experience as a lawyer in Ontario working with a law firm dealing in municipal and planning law or with a municipality
  • Good understanding of corporate law
  • Experience drafting, development agreements including cost sharing agreements, subdivision agreements and site plan agreements, etc.
  • Experience representing landowners before the Ontario Land Tribunal, Committee of Adjustments, and other related in land-use planning matters and disputes
  • Experience taking raw land through the development approval process to obtain subdivision, site plan or development approval, including strata consents
  • Experience in development charge matters, development agreements, dedications or levies (such as parkland dedication), environmental protection matters and amendments to official plans and zoning by-laws
