Instructional Leadership Consultant - Indigenous Education Consultant (K-12) - 3-year TERM Position - 1.0 FTE

Qualifications and Experience

  • Successful applicants for the consultant role will demonstrate evidence of : appropriate basic teacher qualifications and an Ontario teaching certificate;
  • thorough understanding of the First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework; experience related to Indigenous ways of knowing is an asset;
  • strong interpersonal, problem-solving and communication skills; effective facilitation skills that reflect adult learning principles;
  • proven leadership skills; proven planning skills for small and whole group learning sessions; extensive knowledge of and experience with Indigenous culture, Indigenous educational concerns and related legislation;
  • a sound foundation in assessment and evaluation practices as outlined in Growing Success as well as instructional practices that are highlighted in the First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework;
  • effective organization and time management skills, including the ability to meet deadlines; ability to develop and monitor budget expenditures associated with Indigenous initiatives;
  • a valid driver’s license and use of a vehicle. Major Responsibilities : Further developing strong working and learning relationships with local Indigenous communities and organizations;
  • Developing school strategies that are culturally informed and welcoming for Indigenous students and their Indigenous communities;
  • Increasing capacity of Professional Learning Teams to better understand the learning needs of self-identified Indigenous students;
  • Improving achievement for Indigenous students who are not consistently achieving success; Better understanding trends and patterns of Indigenous students not engaged or not attending in school;
  • Support adult learning in using instructional strategies that are cross-curricular, assessment based, research informed and intentionally differentiated to improve student learning;
  • Develop collaborative inquiry through a professional learning community structure for First Nation, Métis and Inuit Studies and NBE Teachers;
  • Co-ordinate the implementation of the Ministry's First Nation, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework including planning, development, evaluation and record keeping;
  • Support the work of the Indigenous Education Advisory Committee; Collaborate with the KPR First Nation Education Liaison;
  • Prepare a variety of ad hoc reports, funding proposals, correspondence, data-base files on a monthly and annual basis, and special reports as requested for the various functions of the Board including Board and Committee Meetings and for the Ministry of Education and / or Indigenous Education Office (IEO);
  • Maintain awareness of and compliance with all applicable legislation; Attend Barrie Regional learning sessions and contribute to the region’s work of implementing the First Nation, Métis, Inuit Education Policy Framework;

Other duties as may be assigned by the System Principal of Indigenous Education as reflected in the Board Action Plan for Indigenous Education.
