As a Community Social Worker, you will partner with residents and other partners, using a community development approach to identify needs, build upon community strengths and capabilities, develop capacity, and create and implement action plans to address issues and promote social inclusion and participation. Primary duties include :

  • Engage a wide range of residents and other partners to maximize citizen access and involvement in community issues.
  • Assess community needs, strengths, and capabilities.
  • Develop and implement community-based plans to promote increased inclusion and participation.
  • Represent communities and bring forward relevant information so that The City can address broader issues in a proactive manner.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Social Work and at least 2 years of practical community development experience in a neighbourhood and / or international setting.
  • Current registration or the eligibility to be registered with the Alberta College of Social Workers is required.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) and access to a personal vehicle for business use is required.
  • Experience must include : Community mobilization with residents to initiate and implement strategies to meet community needs.

Community assessments to identify social issues and solutions. Facilitation of neighbourhood-based engagement and planning for resident-led community development initiatives.

Communication with diverse populations. Development, support and evolution of community networks and partnerships.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in the following key areas : teamwork, assessment, engagement, community development, innovation and creativity, dealing with conflict, political acumen, community social planning and evaluation.
  • The successful candidate will possess confidence to work with a wide range of partners around social issues, including those from different disciplines.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, competence and skills when dealing with diverse backgrounds and different viewpoints.
  • Must be able to work independently and collaboratively, with an encouraging approach when faced with ambiguity, unfamiliar tasks, or conflict.
