About the work environment :
Peoples Group offers a flexible and hybrid work environment. In this role you will work a combination of in-office and remotely from home.
Typically, you'll be working regular business hours, Monday to Friday between 8 : 00am and 4 : 30pm with flexibility around start / end times.
We are hiring for this position out of our Toronto or Vancouver offices. Successful candidates who apply outside of these areas will be expected to relocate and reside in a location that is within a commutable distance.
About you :
You are a practical and business-minded lawyer who likes partnering with the business to develop strategy and drive results.
You are well versed in regulatory obligations and expectations placed on financial institutions and understand how to proactively provide advice to manage risk and ensure compliance.
You are eager to join a growing team responsible for regulatory compliance and corporate governance across the enterprise.
About the qualifications :
- LLB or Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with a provincial bar association.
- 5-10 years of experience practicing law, with a focus on the financial industry and regulatory compliance.
- Strong understanding of financial institution regulation in Canada, including banking, trust, payments, and consumer protection laws.
- Competence in privacy compliance is an asset but not required.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Demonstrated integrity, professionalism, and sound judgment.
About the day-to-day :
- Reporting to the Head, Corporate Legal Affairs you will provide strategic legal advice and guidance to senior leaders across the enterprise on a wide range of regulatory compliance topics.
- Support the development of a regulatory advisory team which holds ultimate responsibility for providing regulatory compliance advice to the organization.
- This includes all financial services advice including Bank Act, financial crimes (PCMLTFA) and consumer protection.
- You will collaborate with various departments, including Compliance, Risk Management, and Legal Operations, to develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices to design effective and efficient legal services delivery and manage compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Stay abreast of changes in laws, regulations, and industry trends impacting the financial industry and advise management on potential implications and strategic responses.
- Represent the organization in legal proceedings, negotiations, and other interactions with regulatory agencies and external stakeholders.
- Conduct legal research and analysis on various legal issues affecting the organization and provide timely and accurate advice and recommendations to management.
Compensation :
Peoples Group is pleased to offer employees a competitive annual salary plus a discretionary profit share opportunity. Salary for this position will vary between $200,000 and $220,000 per year depending on the knowledge, skills, abilities and experience that the chosen candidate possess.
