Position Summary
Reporting to the Foreman or designate, the Operator performs a variety of tasks related to the operation of heavy construction and maintenance of way equipment in the construction and maintenance of track.
Primary / Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Operates Excavators, Backhoes, Skid Steers, and other heavy equipment
- Operates heavy construction equipment to move, load or unload materials.
- Operates equipment in a safe and efficient manner in accordance with regulations, policies and procedures;
- Installs equipment or attachments on machinery or related structures;
- Performs equipment safety, maintenance checks and routine repairs;
- Repairs and maintains equipment, making emergency adjustments as necessary;
- Signals directions or warnings to coworkers;
- Coordinates machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members;
- Locates underground services, such as pipes, wires, prior to beginning work;
- Takes actions to avoid potential hazards and obstructions, such as utility lines other equipment, other workers, and falling objects;
- Keeps records of material and equipment usage and problems encountered;
- Pushes other equipment when extra traction or assistance if required;
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent;
- Minimum one year experience operating excavators, backhoes in a construction environment;
- Valid AZ Driver’s License and a clean driver’s license;
- Ability to understand and follow instructions; read and interpret document such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, construction specifications, and procedure manuals;
- Knowledge of and ability to adhere to safety requirements and procedures;
- Ability to pass pre-employment background checks including drug screening.
- Willing to travel across ontario
- Willing to work nights
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Standing and walking around the project site
- Frequent bending, lifting, digging, shoveling and moving of objects on site;
- Loud noise
- Field environment and subject to all weather conditions;
- Working in and around live commuter trains, high voltage, confined space, safety sensitive cabling
- Day, evening and weekend shift work
