Job Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Operations, Building Services & Operations, the successful candidate will provide a controlled and safe environment for City employees, tenants, and members of the public located within the Civic Precinct which includes;

City Hall, Central Library, Living Arts Centre and Celebration Square including trouble shooting, repairing, monitoring, diagnosing and maintaining all HVAC, mechanical, electrical and life safety systems.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond to service requests from building tenants; make alterations or repairs to environmental, electrical and lighting systems as required.
  • Monitor and control the building environmental systems by conducting regular inspections of mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Carry out daily rounds and inspections of electrical equipment within the Civic Precinct and make adjustments as required.
  • Maintain log and records of operational and maintenance activity; test and record power systems, utility readings and life safety systems.
  • Ensure proper safety procedures are followed at all times.
  • Liaise with external vendors to assist in carrying out work.
  • Maintain good public relations by presenting a professional, knowledgeable and conscientious image to the public.
  • Keep abreast of new technology and changes to regulations.
  • Provide assistance to other Building Services and Operations staff members.
  • Perform minor tasks such as lamp replacement; filter changes; picture hanging; keyboard tray adjustments; cleaning of equipment and rooms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A minimum of Grade 12 or approved equivalency.
  • Certificate of Qualification as an industrial / construction Electrician, Licence 309A is required.
  • A minimum of five years experience in general building repairs, construction and maintenance.
  • General skills in mechanical field are required.
  • Must be proficient in the reading and interpretation of blueprints, specifications and other technical documentation.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, trouble shooting, and manual dexterity skills and the ability to climb ladders, work on roofs or other interior or exterior heights.
  • Able to identify potential problems and respond to emergency situations by taking the appropriate corrective action.
  • Carry out preventative and demand maintenance, electrical systems and equipment.
  • Must be familiar with all applicable municipal and provincial codes, regulations, legislations and by-laws (i.e. Ontario Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, TSSA codes and regulations and WHMIS).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work in a team based environment are essential.
  • Must be proficient with computer systems in order to use the computerized Building Automation Systems and other software applications in use by the City.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid G Driver's License.
  • Must be available and willing to work overtime as required.

Hourly Rate / Salary : $29.89 - $40.98 (Equivalent to salary $62,184.00 - $85,232.00

Hours of Work : 40 hours per week
