The Departments of Oncology and Pediatrics, Section of Pediatric Oncology and Transplantation at Alberta Children’s Hospital (Calgary, AB) is seeking a full-time Pediatric Oncologist with expertise and experience in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology to join a section of seven colleagues.
The successful candidate will have a background that includes additional training and experience in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology. The position will include a non-GFT appointment to the University of Calgary, with academic rank (clinical assistant, clinical associate, or clinical professor) according to experience and achievements prior to commencement of the position. The 1.0 FTE position will be 50-70% clinical, with the remaining 30-50% divided into research, administration, and education, depending upon the successful candidate’s experience and career goals. A research background in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology is an asset.
The successful candidate will focus approximately 60-75% of their clinical practice in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology. This will include consultation for new pediatric Neuro-Oncology patients as well as short- and long-term management of these patients in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. The candidate will work closely and collaboratively with one other senior academic physician currently in the Section to help further develop and expand the Pediatric Neuro-Oncology program at Alberta Children’s Hospital. Responsibilities include :
- Development and leadership of a multidisciplinary and comprehensive neuro-oncology program.
- Being site PI for investigator-initiated and multi-institution clinical trials and / or translational research in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology.
- Working within the Section and health care system administration to develop and bring in the latest advancements in Pediatric Neuro-Oncology.
Knowledge and experience in targeted therapies and clinical trials for pediatric neuro-oncology is required. With the remaining 25-40% of clinical practice, the successful candidate will be expected to provide clinical care and expertise across the full spectrum of pediatric oncology diagnoses including leukemia, lymphoma, sarcomas, and other pediatric malignancies. This will mostly occur in the context of being an attending physician on the inpatient oncology unit.
On-call participation will be proportional to assigned clinical responsibilities and is shared amongst all attending physicians, including a reasonable number of nights and weekends. In-house Clinical Assistants provide hospital coverage 24 / 7, and the program has a strong Pediatric Hematology-Oncology-BMT Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada accredited subspecialty training program, with subspecialty residents also helping with on-call responsibilities. Presence at local and provincial tumor board team-based activities including clinical case reviews at tumor boards and other didactic focus areas is an expectation.
The successful candidate will join the remaining team to help in bedside and other teaching for fellows, residents, and students. We are active participants in various important clinical trial consortia, actively recruiting and enrolling patients on different open studies. It is expected for the candidate to contribute to such activities.
Interested applicants should arrange to have a current curriculum vitae as well as the names of three references forwarded to : Dr. Geoffrey Cuvelier, Section Chief, Section Chief, Pediatric Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant
